have been trying to hunt down a tapping or rattleing noise seems to be coming from the top left side of engine it seems to be loudest when the truck is pulling on a hill it will do it hot or cold it has no codes seems to have started after a couple 3000rpm runs, other than the noise the truck starts and runs fine as it always did , i have seen some posts about the cp3 needing to be tuned out of phase from the engine is there anything to this the post said this will cut down on the noise??????

just grave diggin here

i have a basically the same symptoms as decribed except mine didnt start after 3K + rpms runs.

i cant here anything wierd in the engine bay at idle or while reving but while running on the highway around 2K rpms i here a very weird rattle from driver side firewall like a bolt is bouncing around.

i adjusted my valves a while ago and rechecked them last week and theyr fine.

thers no signs that i have a serious problem but this noise is making me paranoid any ides guys :confused013:

My 06 has the same rattle at the firewall and it's only got 26k on it. I thought valves to but all of those were fine.

I've read and heard of the cp3 timming rattle (if thats what you call it) but it does sound like it's coming from the firewall.

I'd like to find this rattle myself it's anoying. Or something is broke. Who knows?

yea the cp3 thing seems to only tick at idle and the symptoms just dont fit mine.

my truck sounds good at idle and i put a pipe to the cp3 and listened and it was quiet

02fuelhog what rpms is ur rattle worst at? and can u get a vid that will pick up the noise

mine is worst at about 1700-2100 rpm and i also hear it when accelerating from a dead stop. if im cruisin in that rpm range on the highway and give my truck light to moderate throttle i get a bad sounding clatter. its pretty quiet but the nature of the sound concerns me. sounds like marbles in the engine

at full throttle i cant hear it or its not ther not sure which it is

ive read alot of threads about this and im not to concerned now bc many others have the same symptoms only ther clatter is louder than mine and theyv had no issues...yet

seems the general idea is this is related to timing or bigger injectors advancing the timing, "doing away" with the pilot injection (thats the short version)

Check the little 8mm (I think) bolts on the clamps that hold your fuel lines on the intake manifold. When they get loose, it lets the fuel line rattle. I tightened mine up and it helped quite down some of the noise.

I had sort of the same sounding problem you guys are having a while back, and it ended up being the u-joint on my front axle. I could have sworn it was valves or something but it sure wasn't. Just a little food for thought. Good luck..

i replaced my u-joints less than 10K mi ago. but still the clicking sound a u-joints makes should really only be noticeable at slow speeds especially while turning. i dont think u would really here it on the highway and i dont think giving light throttle around 1800rpm while already cruising would make it sound more pronounced.

might be someone elses rattle but for me its definitely not the u-joints

Mine does it in the same rpm range. The higher the rpm though it doesn't get any louder. It stays the same.
I have read also that whatever tuner you have can cuase this as well. I'm currently running the BD triple pup (not for much longer though) maybe the timming vs fuel curve is causing this tick.

My truck only has 27k on it and it's done since i got it with 21k on it.
I biult a custom CAI and now i can't hear it most of the time.
Who know's what this might be, guess it won't hurt anything. We'll see with time.

well let me correct myself. happened to be backing up with my window opened last night and u-joints are clicking!!! i started another thread about this isnce i only got 10K mi on em at most.

still dont think its my problem i only here the u-joints when going slow and turning the wheel pretty far. so it shouldnt be making noises on the highway and the clatter i hear sound slike it comes from the engine

I hope so:confused013:...
