Is there any way to adjust the tension on the tailgate. We would like to put a little more tension to lighten the weight.

You can purchase an aftermarket shock type system for your tailgate. I think it should be just about anywhere you look in aftermarket stuff on line. I cant think of the different places I seen it. I had a tundra before my ram and the tailgate assist was awesome. My wife loved it as well. First time she used the tailgate on the ram she about knocked her sweet little head off
Dee Zee makes em. They are about $25-28 on amazon and most other places.

What is what looks like a tension rod on the lower inside of the tailgate. It doesn't appear to be connected to the outer pivots. The Dee Zee I looked at says doesn't assist going up, only going down. Geno's is similar, leads me to believe built in for up.

The tension rod is connected to drivers side pivot. I had tailgate off to pull pallet out and to get the gate off, it needs to be lowered down, tilt enough to release right side and the tilt up to 45 degrees to release the tension on left side to be able to move the head with keyway from its "socket".
