I just got back from a quick run into town, and on my way back my tach would go down to zero then back to 800, doing this a couple times. After that my truck started to lope really noticeably.

While the tach was going goofy the truck ran fine, and after the loping incident it ran fine. Has anyone ever had this problem? OR does anyone have any idea of what could be going on?

Is there anything I can do to find out if that is the problem? Also where is a good place to get a scanner, because my check engine light comes on about once every week and a half.

a regular old autozone scanner should pull your codes for you.

bad crank sensor my truck did the same but it was the cam sensor same deal... just cycle your key 3 times and it will show any codes in your mileage display

When you say mileage display you mean the over head compass/temp./mileage, I dont have one... Thank you for the info though!! If you don mind me asking how much was this problem for you? and can I fix it myself?

Its not the overhead its the speedo.
