Hey guys,
I'm buying the truck off of my dad and it's a mineral gray 2003 2500 with a 6 speed. I'm 20, in college, and I have some experience with working on motors and such (we used to own a car dealership that I worked at and I've rebuilt dirt bikes.) I was wondering where I should start. I've previously removed the silencer ring, gutted the torgue tube, and I've also installed a 4" turbo back exhaust that goes into a 6" stack. It also has a new clutch that my dad installed (can't remember if it's single disc or dual)
After all the research I've done, I'm planning on going with a smarty programmer, but I was wondering about gauges. I was thinking pyro, boost, and fuel pressure since I don't think I need a trans temp but maybe I'm wrong? Also what other suggestions do you have after this is completed?
Thanks for the help.

Smarty s06 POD, gauges-egt, fuel pressure, boost. U don't need a trans temp gauge. If it has the stock lift pump u might want to get a airdog/fass/mechanical lift pump.

do all this and if its a 4wd put a leveling or lift kit and some 35s :drool2:

and then just save up for any issue you have and you will have some thing random go out eventually.

Well the lift pump is in the tank. Won't I have to lift the bed or drop the tank if I want to install an airdog or fass?
It's 4x4. It's the base model so I think I'm the only kid with crank windows! It has the stock 17" steel rims that I painted black to make them look a little better.
Eventually the plan is to get a leveling kit and some 35's. Maybe some better rims too.
Will I be safe with just the programmer and gauges? I want to keep everything in check first then add power. I just don't want this thing to blow up because of my not doing things right the first time.

unless you tow or do some serious foolin around a tranny temp gauge wont do ya much good. the others are pretty critical (egt, boost, fuel). you should be alright with just a programmer and gauges, its all about how you drive it. you can ruin a stock truck with a stupid foot.

you will have to drop the tank to install an airdog. its pretty easy, just take the two bands off.

what do you mean you gutted the torque tube? i didnt think the 03 had one?

edit:sb:

Fuel filtration is key to long life in a common rail. At the very least, put in a baldwin pf7977 into the stock housing.

It's my daily driver and I don't tow much anymore so I'll leave out the trans temp. What about rail pressure? Would it be worth getting that over the fuel pressure gauge?

I would go with fuel psi over rail. Rail u can always monitor through the obd if u need to for diagnostic purposes, not something that needs to be looked at all the time. There's no other way to monitor fuel psi other than an aux gauge since its not monitored by the truck already. Also tells ya if ur getting the right pressure to the cp3 and if a filter needs changed if u let it go that far. Or if ur still running the stock LP it'll tell u when it craps out on ya.

Ok, so for gauges I'll go egt, boost, fuel pressure. For gauges, I've seen that a lot of guys are running either isspro or autometer, but I'm struggling to find a kit that has the three gauges I need. Most have a trans temp instead of a fuel pressure. I'm going with the a-pillar set up. Is their much of a difference between those two brands?

glowshift also has a "diesel" package with everything you need.
