good afternoon everyone. new to the forum but a 53 year mopar man. LOL The truck is a 01 ram 3500 with the 24v, currently setting at 381,000 miles with never a issue till now.
Last week i got in to go to town and when i went to start it, the starter spins but does not kick out. so my first instinct was to pull the starter and check it. i pulled the starter and hooked it up. The starter kicks the gear out but does not spin which is strange as when it was in the truck it would spin but not kick out. so here are a few things that have been done recently. two new Batteries approximately 4 weeks old and i load tested them just to make sure something didnt go wrong there, checked the relay, it's fine, checked all the wiring that I could think of, so after checking these things and checking voltage to the starter, I reinstalled the starter an it does the same thing. i pulled it back out retested it and it kick the gear out but no spin. so i am looking for suggestions before i buy a starter. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Eric

Are you sure it is spinning when installed? Try repalceing the contacts in the soldenoid they are about 30 bucks for plunger and soleniod. Available at some parts stores, all Cummins and truck or starter rebuild shops. That is what sounds like when you are bench testing The solenoid is working but the associated contacts are worn out and not making contact.

Have you tried jumping it at the starter? Being careful if it's a stick. As fish said it's probably your contacts.

Thank you sir for the reply. I think I will take it to a gentleman down the road.. he has a small shop at his house, he has been rebuilding starters and alternators for almost 50 years. he can most likely fix it faster than i could take it apart.. lol

Please get back to us and let us know what is discovered.
It's always nice after the symptoms are posted to hear back from the conversation starter to understand what caused them.

That if fine if he is reasonable to you. Or buy the contacts from him. Takes them minutes to put them in on the bench.

The best way to repair it is use OEM starter parts. I have seen many aftermarket starter and parts fail quickly. Try and repair the original starter to the truck with original parts for best results.
