Strange engine temp problem.

I noticed something on my 01 dodge 3500, while running down the road at a stedy 68mph on flat ground the factory engine temp gauge is flucuating a lot from hot to cold. I looked on my quadzilla display and it shows it going from 180 all the way to 205. It dosent stop while on the highway. You can leave it ideling for 30+ minutes with out it getting hot or changing at all. When on the highway the clutch fan kicks on and off. I am thinking the waterpump and thermostat need to be replaced, but that dosent explain why it dosent do it on everyday driving and stop and go. Any advice would be great.

wide swings can often be attributed with a coolant volume issue or a thermostat issue. Open the rad cap to check level(dont just assume level is good because the plastic bottle has coolant in it) If that checks out then Id put money on the thermostat .

Exactly. Very rare for a water pump to fail on these truck, not exactly common for fan clutch to fail but thermostats failing are very common for coolant related failures from not flushing the system when required.

I was leaning towards the thermostat anyways. Thanks guys
Simple way to keep it up to snuff...

1. Flush the cooling system every 30k miles or every 3 years.
2. When flushing the block out change the thermostat.

No problems...
i would check fluid first, and change the thermostat, might be stuck partially open or closed

The proper way to test coolant.
Fleetguard Coolant Test Strips 4xCC2602B

Thermostat if you got to open it open to just check why not just replace it? :confused013:
Same thing was going on with mine, flushed it an changed the thermostat an filled it back up an it fixed it
