i feel i need to make a new thread about this as im slightly confused and NONE of the form topics have pictures or laid out parts lists that i can find.

if i buy this: Mopar 52122362AH Dodge Ram Steering Upgrade i under stand it will bolt right in. now i have 37" tires and 16" rims. is this a good route given the large tires or should i go with something else? my truck has a horizontal shock absorbed under the passenger side wich i believe is the steering stabilizer that people say you need to buy an after market bracket to add? i thought ALL trucks came with this?

if this is the steering stab then what should i replace it with? single, dual, rough country, sky jacker, carli, OEM 4th gen?

this seems to replace a fair amount of components under the front. what other steering/suspension related components are there that this kit does not replace?

What exactly are you trying to fix or improve? That's the first thing we need to know. With 37s, it's recommended that you use dual stabilizer shocks. Top guns customs sells a dual stabilizer kit for that. Also a steering box stabilizer will help with wandering steering and general "tight"ness of the front end, $120 on eBay and lots of guys on this forum use 'em.

the truck came with a box stab, i still have 5" or so of steering play. i want to replace EVERYTHING in the front, all of it! i dont know what all the parts are up there tho... shcosk, coils, steering stab, track bar, ball joints, pitman arm, sway bar, upper and lower control arms, what else is there?

im reading up into the upgraded track bar? some bracket and a new bar thats used?

also this truck will be getting thuren coils/shocks 4" this spring so what ever i buy needs to fit into a 4" lift.

being you have a 99 you could have the 98-99HD steering, if your existing set up looks like the pic you showed then you have the T set up the other set up which is junk is the Y design

Definately check for the T style set-up under your truck, if you have it, the 'upgrade' is basicly the same. IF you have the Y style, the upgrade is better.. Also, if you run 16" wheels, I think there is a little grinding involved..
Are you replacing your gear as well?

this depends on if the wheels have any off set or not.

check your steering...you likely already have the 99 HD T-style steering.

also the 4th gen steering assembly is not direct bolt on for 99 and older trucks as your front axle is not as wide as a 2000 and later trucks front axle.

you would need to cut about 1/2" or more off the tie rod to make it work. If you already have the 99 T-style steering, just replace any worn parts like tie rod ends if they have slop, etc and you should be fine. even the 4th gen steering will wear out and need replaced. nothing lasts forever. over 100-200k is a good life for steering components and about the right time to replace them.

gassers never worry much about it because their trucks are on death row around 200k...their engines life is limited after that where ours are just beginning. expecting steering to hold up as long as an overbuilt engine like the cummins is ridiculous...no trucks suspension will outlast the motor unless you have the smoothest roads on earth with optimal conditions and no salt or snow or any of that...

Third gen steering is a great fix...but it only covers the tie rod and drag link. Track bar you need to cover yourself
but there is a 3rd gen upgrade for that too...just make sure you are sitting on the crapper when you are given the price

i still dont know what the diference is from T to Y or HD to non... here are some pics. can anyone link me ot parts or perhaps someone throw my picture into paint and mark out what is what under there. just want to make sure i know what im buying before i throw 4K at the front end. i plan to buy as much from thuren as i can but he does not make everything and given that i have an extra 400-1900Lbs on the front end (summer vs winter) and the 37" tires on 16" rims with a -8mm off set, 8" wide and 4.22" back space, what are the best parts to buy to last me? i dont intend to buy some crazy 1,000.00 ball joints but if there is a 50.00 vs a 150.00 and the 150 is going to last me 5 years vs 8 months then im game.

You have the 99 T-steering for sure.

guess I didn't make the font big enough..

top to bottom...

Drag Link (red)
Tie Rod (green)
Track Bar (light blue)
Stabilizer Shock (dark blue)

the difference between T-steering and Y-steering...

With T-Steering the tie rod directly links both wheels together and the drag link connects to the tie rod to steer it.

with Y-steering the drag link connects to the right wheel and the tie rod connects the left wheel to the drag link. Not the greatest design and not only does it wear out faster, it causes a slight alignment issue when steering.

oooo spiffy! thank you very much good sir. i pass on to you more cowbell and moo!

so T was the better one right? and T is what i have so thats good... for each individual part given my trucks setup, what is the optimal upgrade?

maybe its factory replacement, maybe its me building a bracket and installing a 3rd gen or 4th gen part. perhaps its through thuren or carli, what ever the best route is could someone please let me know. i want this steering to last, be VERY firm like race car firm AND controllable when i slam into rocks, trees, mud pits, ect.

oh also knowing that im installing 4" thuren coils and his 1K$ shock package id like to buy what ever i need for such a lift now. i.e. if a factory replacement part is best BUT i need a longer part or adjustable part in the 4" lift then id like to just buy the 4" lift part.

thanks

i cant understand why you would need to upgrade to a expensive steering shaft... they are just tubes of metal that are under minimal stress providing the power steering is functional. what difference could it possibly make?

on that note, is it necessary to have nylon limiting straps on the suspension? i see carli sells there sets with this.
what does a new sway bar end link give me? i see carli has some for 250 but whats the point? i understand a link that can be removed is good when going off road but is there anything else?

so this comes with a tierod and drag link as a kit: Mopar 52122362AH Dodge Ram Steering Upgrade do i have those parts right?

do we think that buying the lukes links kit for 70 bucks and swapping all of them will be as good or better than buying this kit above? could the bars be bent or is that unlikely or is this 250.00 kit going to upgrade in some way from what i have now? if the bars are the same then id just buy lukes links and be done with it. from there all i need is a track bar and the entire system is replaced. i hear the 4th gen track bars are better so ill go with that option if you all agree... i hear the 3rd gen steering damp is a direct bolt on, is that correct? finally is there ANYTHING in my plan that will need to be modified to accommodate a 4" lift?

i want a really fin strong track bar. on my 1500 rams i went through a track bar a month with OEM replacements

another question, whats better long arms or short arms?

im looking at control arms. i see prices from 350 to 1K and i dont know what to choose. i think i would like adjustable as im not confident that everything will fit with a thuren lift and say a top gun customz arm. what do people recommend doing here? thuren said he no longer makes 2nd gen but for 650 he can make them. i dont know what option to choose and if i can avoid paying 650 and instead pay 300 id be very happy.
