I have a 89 dodge w 250 cummins that when you go down the road and go turn it hesitates then will all of a sudden take of in the direction you are turning and hard to correct and has about an inch of play in the steering wheel more noticable over 30 mph
I would say that your steering box is on it's way out. You should have someone turn the wheel with the truck stopped and you should watch all the steering linkage and see if you can see anything that has a lot of slop in it.
Also check your steering column. While the wheel is being turned, watch the firewall forward side of the column (not the shaft) for movement.
