Which of these would be a better towing turbo? HTT wants me to put the 13cm ss housing back on and send it to them so they can make some changes to it. I am trying to decide if I want to give the HTT another chance after the changes or sell it while it is fresh and try a II. Right now I have a 65 exhaust wheel, but II told me the reason I was running higher egt's at cruising speeds was because I had the 65 wheel when I should be running the 71.

If i where you Id stay w/ HTT and go SS. The bigger turbo you go the higher EGTs youll have at cruise, but lower at WOT. So what Im saying is your current turbo will be a touch cooler cruising then the other 2, but when you get on the gas theyll be cooler.

I also i see your in Idaho, scap the ideas of upgrading, go see MPI and put a s400 under your current turbo and have a kick set of compounds. Best of both worlds lower EGTs and a lot more power potential.

I find it somewhat puzzling that II would tell you that, the 65mm turbine is going to keep egt's lower at cruising than the 71, just the opposite under excelleration.

I would give HTT another shot.

Now having said that, I absolutely loved my SPS 62, more so than the Silver 62.

Actually they told me the 71 would be cooler while cruising, but a different guy at II told me he would set me up with the PS 62 with a 65 ex/wheel which is comparible to what I have. I don't know who to believe.

I have thought about compounds, but then I hear people saying through porting I can get the same results for about the same money. With less stress on stuff and won't need studs and o-rings. I weigh a little over 15,000lbs. empty and between 24 and 26 loaded. My #1 goal is good mpg's, and I want to keep my egt's down for longer engine life. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on how to do this. Would the compounds keep me cool between 1700 and 1800 rpm? This is where I get my best mpg's, but also have trouble keeping my egt's below 1000 if I am not on level ground.

exactly right ! :thumbsup

I have had many different HTT configurations

for a solid reliable & quick spooling small 62 turbo the HTT HTB2 with a cast 14cm = 62/65/14

is very hard to beat make an easy 45 lbs of boost all day long & push 525 rwhp easy in a single turbo setup excellent all around turbo

IMO you are running hot cruising EGTs because of the 85 hp injectors you have along with your programming turned up on higher settings !

with those injectors when just cruising or towing turn down your programming & your egts will be a lot cooler the 65 wheel will run cooler when towing and cruising it's only at WOT & full tilt boogie with your programming on kill mode that the 71 will run noticeably cooler egts :thumbsup

the next change I would make if I were you sell those 85 hp injectors too big for your needs & way too hot of an injector for the loads you pull !! = main reason for the hot EGT's
the larger htt 14cm exhaust housing will also help to keep things cooler
STAY WITH THE 65 WHEEL !!

I would get a set of Don M fluxs (1s ) approx 40-50 hp injector those injectors idle smooth as glass way lower egts then stock injectors , almost zero smoke , & they get better mileage then stock injectors best of all worlds for the loads you deal with !

Should I tell HTT to keep the 13ss housing and put on a cast 14 then? As for the injectors the guy claimed one rig he did made 85hp more than the stockers, but they felt somewhere between the tow and performance mode with stock inj. Probably closer to 50hp than 85hp. It idles smoother, smokes way less, and gets the same or better mpg's with the modded inj., but I did notice my fuel pressure runs 3000-4000psi lower while under load. I probably should mod my pump. It could be getting tired it has had around 12,000 gallons of fuel through it.

I've run a Phat Shaft 62/65/12 and an HTT 62/71/13ss. Cruising egt's are the same between the two turbos. 850-900* at 70mph. WOT egt's are better with the HTT. Spool up is slightly slower with the HTT but hits just as hard as the PS. And when I say slightly slower I'm talking 100rpm. Nothing major. Drive pressures are lower with the HTT. The PS was 1:1 at 40psi. The HTT is at 1:1 ~47psi. What that means to me is that the HTT can make more power more efficiently. Also, the wastegate on the HTT is MUCH larger than the PS (and I had an oversized wastegate installed in the PS). With the PS I had my wastegate set at 40psi and it would over run the wastegate to about 46psi or so before starting to come back down. With the HTT I have it set at 50psi and it stops dead at 50psi and I can't overrun it no matter how hard I try.

does not look like by your sig that your going for an all out street performance drag racing type setup

IMO for the rock solid reliability of the htt 14cm cast housing , & the fact that the performance & egt will also be a huge improvement the 14cm housing will operate cooler then the 12 you have now

also if in the future an exhaust brake is going to be a consideration the 14cm is much better suited for that , even htt will come clean on that one if asked which housing for towing using an exhaust brake will be the better setup cast 14cm vs
ss 13 the cast 14cm wins that one hands down !

also zero boost elbow type issues with the htt 14cm cast

stay with htt you are there now & II turbos are so close in comparison you are truly spliting hairs between choices htt vs II like for like turbos save money stay htt go 62-65-14cm set wastegate at 42-45 lbs max call it a day

next line of business IMO your injectors are causing more of a problem then people are leading you to believe I bet a set of flux 1s and the htt 62-65-14cm your problems go away & then you will have a very happy truck with a happy driver LOL.....

Looks like I have everything I don't need LOL. I had an exhaust brake (PRXB) before I bought the turbo. Dave told me the 62/65/13ss would be the ultimate towing turbo, but when it didn't work I was told by another source to get rid of the ss and try a 12 or 14 cast. Dave recommended the 12. My holset worked better, it just isn't as strong. I decided to try the injectors because they only cost me $400. They have a 6 port tip, different spray angle, and he balanced the bodies. I might be trying the flux 1s if raising my rail pressure doesn't work. Why is the cast housing better than the ss if you have an exhaust brake?

I wish I didn't have to learn things the expensive way.
