no doubt... they all have issues. cam blank softness issues wasn't one of them, though.

was it?
Not that I know of, but that system was the same from the old 12v. Already perfected and proven in the B series long ago.

Engine wise:
03-04 drop valve seats

04.5-07.0 tend to melt pistons more, but that may be a user error. In any case all 5.9s have terrible injectors and fuel systems.

07.5-12 terrible emissions system, tend to blow head gaskets, but that may be a user error.

13-18 have grid heater bolt problem because of faulty solenoids. C&Cs can drop valve seats.

Give a few more years, and the cam issues should disappear as they are rectified. But with the way things are going, there’s probably going to be very little R&D in this engine from Cummins, so we’ll see.

Thankfully, the aftermarket is strong for these trucks.

Wagler may be offering a flat tappet conversion sometime this year for those who don’t believe in rollers.

Hoping mine isn’t one of those impacted. 47k and no abnormal noises yet. 9/19 build date.

Don’t really feel like pulling the front end parts to fix this.

I guess I’ll worry about it if/when the time comes.

So the magnets I bought from Amazon were just strong enough to hold the lifters up, but not enough to lift back in.

Magnets from Amazon: https://a.co/d/bFV82OB Come in packs of 2, so need 6. I cut the handles off for ease of maneuverability.

Then I gorilla glued these magnets to the magnets from Amazon. 5/16” diameter Home Depot or Ace has them. It’s super easy as the magnets hold them self together while the glue dries.

I’ll get a pic later, but now it holds the lifter without fear of randomly dropping…

Still waiting for new lifters from Dodge, so I have some time to practice.

Every gen has one problem or another. FWIW, I prefer the new trucks with a couple fixes then old trucks with much more fixes.
Depending on your desire for problematic emissions especially when one uses their truck in extreme cold temps in remote locations thus lots of idling happening rule out the newer trucks.

I would say the older trucks require less upgrades. All the older trucks have far better aftermarket support as well. The newer trucks and this is not just ram are incredibly problematic and seem to be far more effected by the "supply chain issue" bulls hit.

Not sure if anyone noticed this from Hamilton Cams.

A solid flat tappet conversion kit for the 2019+ Cummins.

Plus they now offer an aftermarket roller cam.

Nice, but out of stock.

I will say solid rollers are supposed to be superior as the valve opening ramp can be steeper and duration can be longer. Also, no zinc required for rollers.

If I knew Hamilton had a cam, I would’ve bought that one, but too late now.

So surprise surprise, the new lifter has NO oil groove or hole.

And I was wrong! Some of the new ones have smooth necks and the others have grooved necks.

And actually, ALL new lifters are MADE IN MEXICO.😂

Do you think the one without the oil groove will be as good?
No idea, but they must have made the change for a reason…

Maybe cost? Lol

Just borescoped the lifter bores in block. There’s no oil passage to even supply that, so it probably makes zero difference.

One thing that’s interesting is they made dimples on the lifter near the centering pin.

The small oil groove lifters have no dimples.
The large oil groove lifters have one dimple.
And my new lifters have 3 dimples.

I’m wondering if this signifies what generation of lifter design it is…

Someone at Cummins must know what is going on with the changes in their hydraulic roller lifters.

How would someone contact that person?

They most likely won't say anything. My dad had his Cat C3406B engine rebuilt by a reputable shop and they used all CAT parts. 5000kms he was having half the engine rebuilt because one of the redesigned cam follower clips had failed and did a lot of damage including destroying the cam. The clip failing allowed the cam to rotate 90 degrees and the rest is self explanatory.

The shop had access to the TSB from CAT to not use these new clips and yet they would not warranty the engine. Even though those were the parts that CAT sent them.

What makes it worse is if the shop wanted to make a stink about it CAT would've just revoked his CAT distribution license. If we ever get to take back our countries we are going to need a lot of rope.

Cummins definitely wouldn’t disclose anything. I even called them to order these lifters direct, and they stated Chrysler has exclusive rights to purchase them. It’s pretty obvious who spec'd out the hydraulic roller setup and CP4s…

Its not accidental that the newer the vehicle the bigger the piece of s***. It's all part of the "you'll own nothing and be happy eating your bug sandwich."

Ram deliberately chose the CP4 knowing that it isn't designed for our sh!tty quality fuel in North America. Regular gas in much of Europe is 91 octane not 87 like it is here

Check out the 6.6 and 3.0 Duramax diesels requiring the TopTeir diesel.

No they chose the CP4 because it was best bang for the buck to meet higher fuel pressures for emissions requirements. However, IMO the failure rate was higher as it was over driven compared to the other brands.

The hydraulic setup was spec'd because of NVH. They wanted something a lot quieter than the last gen. I guess they figured there wouldn’t be much problems since the other brands have had rollers in their trucks since about forever.🤷🏻‍♂️

Thing is Cummins can’t make a good roller setup. Look at ISXs, they eat cams too.

I think it has to do with cam hardness personally.

Which camshaft did you decide to go with?

Wagler stage 1 as that’s all I knew about when ordering. I didn’t even know Hamilton had a setup.
