Solid Lifters for 2019+

Been doing some digging and someone (Wagler) is finally offering a solid roller lifter conversion for 2019+ trucks.

It uses the factory ISB adjustable rockers, but just replaces the internals of the hydraulic lifter with a solid spacer. EDIT: Also uses custom pushrods as 2019 uses different ball on lifter and different length.

Seems like a permanent solution for when the hydraulic lifters go bad.

That's a lot of money to just modify the lifter and the rest of the parts. Before I'd do it, if I ever have say a push rod failure, how do I avoid having to buy another complete kit ?
Pushrod failure? What?

This is a fix for the collapsing lifters in 2019+ Cummins. Doesn’t apply to your engine anyways so don’t worry.

There’s been cases of cam wear and you can hear lifter noise under normal conditions on the 2019+ trucks. Time will tell just how robust the lifters are.

In any case, if my truck ever eats the cam, it will need the cam and lifters pulled anyways, so this would be the solution.

What I'm saying is the rockers are OEM Cummins. Are the push rods ? The piece they are making to install in the lifters are made by somebody. What if I need more parts ? DO I have to purchase the whole package, or are individual parts available. AND we do have some of these trucks where I work.
No idea about pushrods. EDIT: Looks like they are made by Manton for Wagler. 2019 uses a different ball end and on both sides, so custom pushrods are needed with different length, different ball end on one side, and the rocker cup on the other side.

Those spacers might just be machined by who offers the kit (Wagler). They are simply a replacement for the internals of the factory hydraulic lifters used in 2019+ Cummins. I’m sure they could also be made by someone with a CNC machine.

I’m sure if someone buys a kit, and ever needs parts, then they’ll sell them individually. By time parts will be needed though, I’d imagine there will be more options.
So are the hydraulic lifters part of why the new Cummins are so damn quiet? I was standing by a newer one today for the first time and could hardly tell the damn thing was running.
That’s one small reason, and it just gets rid of the slight ticking noise of the earlier engines. The main reason it’s quieter is because they added another pilot shot that’s only used at idle speed.

When I reduced that idle pilot, my truck sounded like a 2014-2018… so I added it back! Lol

I thought they had a true solid lifter upgrade, as well as the spacer / internals swap kit...
??? It is a true solid lifter upgrade.… Or are you thinking flat tappet?

From a performance and friction standpoint, solid roller lifters are great. Roller lifters usually only fail when the hydraulic part collapses and it bounces. Solid ones can’t collapse.

right. i think they offer a full kit with a correct cam and all the fixings... I should look vs. conjecturing on the forum lmao
The block design has changed with the new ones. Different bore diameter and new bore has a key way for the roller lifter centering key. The Cummins roller lifter cannot rotate in it bore, it can only bounce.

With that, it is impossible to just drop in flat tappets. FWIW, solid rollers are superior to flat tappet for a variety of reasons, hydraulic or not.

So…

Because I just hate a stock truck so much (and because I have some idle tick), this is now going to be a small (not really) project.

Ordered the very expensive special lifter removal tool from Mopar. Will either rent it out or sell after I’m done.

I am contemplating the Wagler cam as well, but idk if it’s worth it.


And good God these trucks are hard to take part compared to 3rd and 4th gens…No wonder people pull cabs. It’s easier.

wait…this is all just to do the lifters?! i understand doing this for the cam but lifters?! maybe i haven’t looked into these newer engines too deep yet
Lifters and/or cam. The lifters come out through the cam hole and a stupidly expensive Mopar special tool is needed to do the job.

I decided to go with a Wagler Stage 1 tow cam as I’m not putting a hollow China cam back in.

A special tool for removing the lifters that are only in the 19+ engines? Did you buy that tool and if so what does it look like?
It grabs the lifter and turns them down and back up for install.

Since the roller lifters are not mushroom like the older flat tappet lifters, I was hoping there was some way the roller lifters could be removed from the top without disturbing the cam.

That does seem to be a lot of wear on the cam. I hope the roller lifters are ok.
I’ll pull cam tomorrow when I get my magnets to hold the lifters. I have new lifters coming anyways…


Be glad you don't have to do this job on a 3rd gen. I'm seriously envious of the ease of getting to the cam.
Believe me, it’s waaaaaay easier on a 3rd gen. I’ve done both.

Easier eh? I take your world for it since you have a newer gen, but damn, when I did my 3rd it was a process!

Are you planning on doing a complete write up for your gen or just posting a few pics here and there on this thread?
Of the actual cam and lifter install, I’ll do a write up.

Pulling the front end, no. Way too many steps. EDIT: Maybe I will when putting back together, didn’t take any pics taking apart as I was rushing as usual.

So the 2019+ roller lifters are not able to be removed from the top and not able to be installed from the top?
And it doesn't sound like wooden dowels can be used to hold the lifters up for cam removal/installation like on the 5.9L engines?
And the timing cover still has to be removed to pull the cam?
And a special tool for installation of the roller lifters.
Pretty much. As the special tool is out of stock, I’m experimenting with magnets holding the lifters up, but I may buy/make another tool once I have a lifter in my hand.
Good grief, Cummins could have made some changes with the 2019+ engines to make it easier to service the cam and lifters.
Lol the idea is to make newer vehicle less serviceable and more like cellphones. Last Cummins to have a tappet cover was the 98.5-02 24v.

It’s seems there was a hardening and hydraulic issue, but I won’t know until I get the lifters out. I’ll look over the rollers real good.

I’m contemplating spending more $$$ on going with the Jesel lifters too. Super expensive, but if this is the quality we can expect from Cummins, then I have no choice.

Also, I called Cummins and was refused sale of factory lifters as Chrysler has “exclusive rights” to sell those lifters.🤦🏻‍♂️
