Note* I AM SET ON A 2500 MEGACAB RAM TRUCK WITH SET OPTIONS*

*The hemi vs cummins (price) is what has me lost as well as what the dealer is offering

as mentioned in a previous thread...I noticed the gas pedal lag.

I test drove a 2014 I wasn't bothered by the fact that i needed to floor the cummins for it to get up and go, i realize its a truck and not a sports car...but im having trouble justifying the additional cummins price etc....

Im in Northern California/Central Valley. I was deciding between a 2014 2500 Mega Cab 4x4 6.4 Hemi with 4.1 or a the Cummins. I initially was hooked on the cummins for the prestige of the engine and the longevity (which is what i am purchasing off of for future endeavors, im not looking to trade this truck in, its a lifer for my kids as well ) but after hours and hours of lurking and researching and reading im not so sure the cummins (and all the maintenance and lack of towing but daily driving) is the right choice...

The dealer ordered a neighboring Cummins over for me to see that has everything i wanted minus the sunroof....I drove it, loved it and saw nothing wrong with it what so ever (besides the price). The more and more ive read the more and more i have been steering away from the cummins to the hemi. I rarely will ever tow and its more of a future investment with the cummins. It will be my daily driver but since there are absolutely ZERO of the hemis i built with the ram builder withing 200 miles I have this cummins brought in...

Im not sure whether the cummins is the way to go. Its running me 58g msrp - 3000 rebate and another rebate bringing it to 53...but since i want the addition of a sunroof i have that additional cost as well as the premier paint and interior protection and the 7 year warranty which is all being financed...at 84 months for 2.9 percent at 820 a month... which i think is at 63g

This is what i built and wanted in a 2014, but there are non...So i built it in a 2015 Hemi with all the below in the newer model and MSRP comes out 51720 with 72 months at 2.9 is 720 a month...

The only thing that i got that i was being rebated from the initial 2014 cummins was 3000

yet in this 2015 Hemi with the same exact setup and the factory sunroom its 51g ( i understand the cost of the cummins+tranny (9g) and i believe 2500 in rebate...

Are there any other rebates i should be looking for? I thought i came in at the right time of the year to get a great deal on a 2014 but that cummins seems extremely expensive....

Thoughts, tips and some help here...Should i just go with and order the 2015 Hemi and forfeit this 2014 cummins i test drove? I would like to have a 2014 hemi but there are absolutely none within 200+miles in my area....

and what would be a good deal on both? I kind of felt rushed today to take the cummins but thankfully i came in with a plan and still have the option of backing out of the cummins...

Note i also wanted to go in to get a direct quote and see the real numbers of this all. I actually made a point of having my brother co sign as a buffer to use so that once got the numbers, i could crunch everything and see wha the ACTUAL cost would be after everything...I signed and told them my brother had to look things over before we moved forward which they are aware of...

I went on Truecar and pulled the exact same truck (2014 Cummins) at about 50g from three different dealers and monthly payments at 2.9 for 72 months at 600 or so dollars...

So im not sure how the hell i got 84 months at 2.9 on the cummins at 820 ( with the addition of a sunroof, coat protection, gap, and the chrysler warranty with oil change)

I don't want to feel like im being ripped off ... some good advice on what to look for, avoid and go for would be helpful.

If your not towing and don't have a need for a diesel then I would go hemi. Diesel is a dollar more a gallon. These trucks really need to be worked to keep the dpf clean. Before all this emissions crap came to play you could motor around town all day with your diesel and never worry. Now you have egr coolers that can clog if the truck idles to much... 8000 dollar exhaust systems that need engine exhaust heat to function properly. Your other choice...if you go diesel ...is to delete all that emissions crap off the engine and drive how ever you please.....but it'll void your warranty.

No way I would ever take a 7 year loan on a truck. It is a trick to get people to buy more vehicle than they can afford.

Sounds like a Hemi will work well for you.

If you have to be concerned with 10k dollar difference then you probably aren't going to enjoy having the cummins. I daily mine 3 mile one way and 3 miles back. Once or twice a month I get out and open it up for 2-3 hrs when I go to the ranch. I've pulled a trailer 4 times since march. I bought it because I wanted it and could afford it. If you never plan on towing long distance or heavy I think the hemi would be the way for you for your intended purposes.

i think you are paying way to much. i bought a '14 2500 CTD big horn, i'm also in NorCal (i bought at Elk Grove) and i was under $50K OTD w/T&L... however i didn't buy the other 'extras' and i don't have a sunroof, so that's going to certainly change things a bit.

i would also say the Hemi is probably a better choice given your description. good luck and sounds like you are doing your homework. :)

On a 2014 you should be getting 12k off MSRP. Look online at other dealers and print and bring in to your dealer. On a 2015 prob 8-10k off MSRP.

Down payment it what really makes a difference in monthly payment.

I was like you in September however I wanted a longbed so mega cab was out for me (BTW I think you will like what you built very similarly equipped to mine). Mine is a daily driver and will possibly tow a trailer next race season.

I chose diesel because I always wanted a diesel truck since I was a kid :hehe:, but like the others have stated deleting them is the way to go. Unfortunately I haven't deleted mine yet as it is hard to do this now.

Now about pedal lag, the Cummins only has 3.42 for axle ratio, so keep in mind that hemi can be higher, like the 4.10 you looked into, so acceleration will be better.

I don't know how things are in CA, in NC we have to put weighted tags on trucks over a certain weight, so getting the hemi might save a few $ down the road.

When I got mine I over looked everything on paper and on the truck. If it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't. Some dealers know what they are selling but most don't. Ask questions you know the answer to and if they give a totally untrue answer, just walk away I did this about 4 times at different dealers :rof

Hope this helps, PM me if you would like to.

A lot of this is rebates we don't qualify for, like new student discount and military discount. 12k off is a sales gemic check the fine print.

I don't think to many students are new and are in the military too.

I just jumped to a Power Wagon w/ 6.4 Hemi, its a beast.. I have owned 5 Duramax diesel's since 03, and loved every one of them and miss one until I pull into get fuel. Just in the cost of fuel ($1.00 diff per gal) I save $31.00 each fill up plus the $9000.00 savings on the cost of the Cummins.. Now I'm getting 13 to 14 mpg saw 18 once up in Wyoming, but you will get that or worse w/ a Cummins unless you are on the highway for a good long stretch...
Another way to justify the cost difference is in maintenance.

Cummins 70.00 plus oil changes, fuel filters, DEF, additive etc.

Hemi I have 45.00 oil change and a air filter, change the spark plugs every 100,000 miles which I won't have it that long so not worried about that.
So based on what your doing I would say go to the Hemi you won't regret it. I am really liking my 2014 Ram... Wish I would have waited and got a 15 just for the power folding mirrors, but oh well... On a side note, if I go back to a diesel it will be the Cummins...
Also you should be able to steal a 2014 gas or diesel right now... I just saw in the local paper a 2014 Hemi Tradesman for 32,000.00 and the Cummins Tradesman for 38,000.00

Skip all the added 'protections' they are not worth it and just pad the dealers bottom line. I bought my 2014 in dec '13 for over 10k off with only a couple of incentives. The dealers have a lot of margin and holdback to work with, just need to do your research. At a minimum you should be at invoice with all the rebates subtracted.

IMHO, I'll say the three things I have many times said on this and other forums in this regard
1.If you don't need a diesel, you don't want one.
2.If you don't need a 3500 (over a 2500) you don't want one.
3.If you have money to burn and can afford to buy a truck every time you are tired of the current one, then ignore the first two...

Gimmick??? Really???
Sounds like someone paid too much for a truck and is bitter about it.

12K off MSRP is standard

Here is the Purchase order on 2014 3500 mega with MSRP of 66,995

I do love the cummins, i loved driving it and I do not have a heavy foot so that is not my worry. As i said the additional value of the engine is not of my concern either as i said this vehicle will be my baby as i look to take such care for it to have my son or daughter drive one day. I just don't want to get ripped off or a bad deal.

As for warranty I have printed the Ziegler warranty and am aware that the cummins only carries a 8 year maximum plan and the hemi is lifetime.

The other thing that somewhat concerns me is all this epa lock down on the engine and so far i have read nothing but problems from the cel etc . Being this will be my first diesel (which i have always wanted) it has somewhat scared me away from it since i will be using it as my daily driver as well in which my commute is less than 5 miles round trip. Also I plan on at least monthly taking the big C on a nice long trip to get her up and running as she should. Towing will still be a minimum but i want to have that towing capability if so i need it. Im also aware the 4.1 has similar GVW as the cummins and have read some great things about this combo (yes im aware its a gas guzzler ) even with gas, gas prices are about a dollar shy of diesel .

Im going to go back in on Wed. With the numbers i have provided... What should i shoot for with them? at 84 months with a 3000 and 1500 rebate and 2.9 percent financing. If i can't get about 600 OTD with t & l with exactly what i want and a matched Ziegler max warranty... Im going to say the cummins and continue my search and probably go with the hemi. That exact same setup with the hemi would easily take off 6 g dropping everything off considerably...

Am i wishing on a star to walk in and tell them for that 2014 cummins with the added options i want (sunroof, paint and interior protection, and warranty price match) i want it at 600 a month ? Does that sound feasible? * all the other addons the cummins already has.

Or should i just screw the cummins and build a new 2015 hemi loaded as i want which still would come out cheaper than the 2014 cummins as presented yesterday?

I want the cummins, just not at the price they are trying to pitch at me...especially knowing the hemi i want as option 2 is a lot less and in the new year...

If it's a daily driver and your not towing, why the 4.10

For the same reason I even considered the cummins...If i need it, i have it... More so with the cummins but unless im 5th wheeling it.. the 4.1 can pretty much do the same thing from my understanding of everything I have read...If i buy a truck, i want to buy a truck that can do what it should do

Alright so i did a little research and i came up with this on multiple sites.... Should i walk in with this and use as leverage? Anyone approached a vehicle this way?

That price is A LOT different than the 58090 of the Total Price I got from the initial sheet whose base price started at also 42330

Even knowing this is the cummins honestly everything its been said to be in these newer models with the who emissions system having it in a choke hold?
