Probably not a necessity, but a bad idea... not really. I feel like the snubber is more necessary for a VP-44 where you get the hydraulic pulsation from the injection pump.
I put one on mine and I have not looked back. I mean they are pretty cheap compared to the guages. Some have had reported more than normal sender failures without a snubber.
I just used a tapped banjo fitting off the bottom of the fuel filter canister, to the snubber, to an 18" grease gun extension and mounted the sender on the fire wall.
