This thread will detail my transition from a high 10 second 4wd street truck to a high 8 second 2wd street truck. See the transion of a simple daily driver to a 10 second state record holder, Smokem #1 here.

The base vehicle for this new build?...

Subbed for watching you a year or 4 ahead of me!!
I have been scouring this country for a year looking for a single cab. Plus all the other stuff will slow me down.

Good luck with the build and can't wait to see it coming along.

Can't wait for the fabrication pictures. If you haven't followed his other thread, he takes great pictures IMO.
Good luck with this build should be fun.

The plans aren't locked down just yet, but I do have some firm goals.

1) The chassis needs to be built, from the get go, to allow me to run 8.50 safely, and competitively, without needing a Bill Gates money motor. So it's gotta be light. 4300 lbs with me in it could get me into the 8's with the motor I already have.

2) The truck has to be streetable. Not reasonable or comfortable to drive on the street, but capable. It won't have AC, or power windows, but it will have a defroster, and cloth covered seats.

3) 4 link rear

4) Big slicks

5) 4130 "8.50" cage and back half at the minimum. I'm hoping the new SFI 25.6 specs come out soon, but I don't know if I can justify building a full tube chassis in my tiny garage.

This winter will be all about the chassis. I'll decompress my old motor and hope I can get another year out of it before I build my other one for bigger injectors and lots of nitrous. We'll have to see how it looks inside, maybe that will happen sooner than later. :p

I think so. I sold my 363 to a local guy and promptly spent that on new transmission parts. I might build new mounts and piping for them if I get a wild hare up my arse. I definitely need to build a new "down" pipe.

First wrenches on the new chassis turned today. I didn't get too far, spent too much time cleaning out the shop and shed so I can store fenders, transmissions, engines, etc, while I work on the new rig. The truck has been sitting in the yard half the summer, its been killing not being able to start tearing into it!

Over the next three weeks I need to firm up my plans for the build, so lets hear what you think I should do, or how I should do it.

  • Fabrication - I'm going to order 1-3/4 4130 .095 wall tubing for the main cage and chassis. 1) I have a die for that size. 2)I want the larger diameter tube for strength, over the minimum 1-5/8 .093 required by the IHRA/NHRA 8.50 cage
  • Software - I'm also going to order some new bending software, hoping that it will help me save some tubing, and some time.
  • Electrical - I want the electrical to represent my absolute best effort. I don't want to take any shortcuts in this area, and I want to try to future proof the system in every way possible. I could really use some help here, so speak up if you see something I might be missing. I'm seriously considering using a solid state device for all my circuit switching and protection needs... Racepak Data Systems - Professional Motorsports Data Acquisition Systems
  • Data Logging - I hope to install, or at least plan for, something like the MoTeC Display Logger.

I picked up some big ol meats at the last track day, should be good enough for mockup and maybe even a pass or two.

The beginning of any big project of mine starts with free thinking on paper, research, and lots of calculations.
