Smoke from dash

Hey y’all,

So this morning leaving for work I noticed a burning smell in the cab of my truck. I thought maybe it was something outside, as it’s common for people to burn trash, and didn’t think much of it. But after driving a few minutes I noticed the smell hadn’t gone away. When I pulled up to a stop sign I noticed smoke coming from behind the dash on the drivers side in the far corner. I immediately pulled over thinking something was catching fire, popped the hood, smelled around and didn’t see or smell anything out of the ordinary. The smell is only in the cab.

Has anyone had a similar experience or know of what could be burning in my dash? I don’t know if this is something that will pass and shouldn’t worry too much, or if it’s something that should be addressed ASAP.

If y’all could give any kind of insight on what might be going on I’d really appreciate it.

If I can get a video of the smoke, I’ll be sure to post it.

Thanks in advance!

There's all kinds of wiring in that general area, more than speaker wiring. If it were a speaker and were burning up or you had shorted together the speaker wiring, the speaker won't work. It doesn't take much to kill one or really affect it.

You can take the lower plastic kick panel off below the steering wheel, then behind it remove the metal cover to access under the dash a little better. More than likely something is rubbing over time and is faulting. Keep in mind where you saw the smoke may not be the exact location, it may be from somewhere close by and moves around to come out of that location. If you find it now, you can reinsulate wiring and move things around/insulate things to keep it from happening again. If you wait, you could lose functionality of something, the truck may just quit on you or you very well could have a burn down!

Not trying to scare you, just trying to let you know it's a serious thing. I don't want to see anyone lose their vehicle. Get a fire extinguisher too!

Please post back what you find!
