There's all kinds of wiring in that general area, more than speaker wiring. If it were a speaker and were burning up or you had shorted together the speaker wiring, the speaker won't work. It doesn't take much to kill one or really affect it.
You can take the lower plastic kick panel off below the steering wheel, then behind it remove the metal cover to access under the dash a little better. More than likely something is rubbing over time and is faulting. Keep in mind where you saw the smoke may not be the exact location, it may be from somewhere close by and moves around to come out of that location. If you find it now, you can reinsulate wiring and move things around/insulate things to keep it from happening again. If you wait, you could lose functionality of something, the truck may just quit on you or you very well could have a burn down!
Not trying to scare you, just trying to let you know it's a serious thing. I don't want to see anyone lose their vehicle. Get a fire extinguisher too!
