I have a smarty Jr. on my auto 48RE. I have had my truck in twice to fix the common hunt shift. When my truck Is set to STOCK, the tranny shifts great. But when I set the smarty to “FUEL ECONOMY” or “TOWING”, my tranny goes back to that dreaded hunt shift at light throttle. I can power through, but would rather not.

I also have never updated my smarty and have one of the original versions-whatever came on it in the box.

Do I need to update the smarty?

If so, what settings are suggested as far as the timing/torque management?

Will this even help my problem?

Will I lose the “added power” adjusting those levels?

I guess this part doesn’t really matter, but will I lose my ability to roll some coal with the updated versions?

Thanks guys, i appreciate it.

I dont think updating the smarty will do anything. Do you know what they replaced in your trans?
Replaced VB and rebuilt TC, governor pressure solenoid and a few other things.

But like i said..it shifts/drives perfect W/O the smarty. Once i download the programmer, then it shifts retarded.
This is why im wondering if i need to update my Smarty to a newer version.

I assume you have a stock valve body. The smarty increases the line pressure causing the gear hunt. I just ordered the following, it claims to fix the issue. I hope to have it installed in the next couple weeks and will let you know.
Dodge "RE" Governor Solenoid to GM
Pressure Control Solenoid Conversion Kit
#REC. This kit was specifically designed to handle higher base pressure in high performance applications and to improve the reliability of the governor solenoid in normal use. In performance units the pressure can flood the Dodge solenoid and cause a no shift condition at full throttle. This is the fix. Fits all rear wheel drive RE model transmissions. Added 9-25-2008. Cost $149.00

PATC 46RE 47RE 48RE Transmissions, Performance Transmission A518, 518 is about 3/4 way down the page
So even with all the aftermarket tranny stuff you've got, you still have the problem?

I would, though, like to hear your thoughts on that part when you get it installed.

Mine actually shifts better with the smarty-jr than without. Doesn't gear-hunt as much, shift points are higher in the RPMs, and when needed only drops down one gear when pulling a grade rather than dying in OD then dropping two gears like it did stock. I have the 5.08 version the software. Software upgrade is free, certainly worth a try.
Maybe i'll just do that and see, cause i never have updated, just wonderin if i'll still be able to roll come coal every now and then?
