So I have read on here that going from a smarty to HP tuner you might have problems, well I put the smarty back to stock and then tried to pull my stock file to HP tuner and it won't read. So what's my options? I emailed smarty for a stock file. Will this fix it? Why does smarty claim it won't leave a trace, but it seems like it does. I really don't want to go to the dealer and get it flashed because the smarty messed things up or misrepresented what it does.

What year is your truck? 03-05 can’t be read no matter what. HPTuners will generate a stock file for you that you need to use.

It's an 06 truck. I'm going with optimal welding tune, but he needs your stock tune before he can write the new tune. Again this is my first HP Tuner experiance. I have read though this has happened before with smarty. HP Tuner reads my vin, but says it can't read the ecm/pcm.

Almost sounds like the smarty didn't actually put you back to stock since they would lock it once tuned to keep someone from stealing their tunes.

My SIL is going thru this right now, we are trying to get his truck ('07) switched over to HPT & have learned a couple of things...

1) ECM could not be read, it was "locked"
2) we got a recovery tune from Smarty, downloaded it
3) ECM now could be "read" to create the base tune
4) Writing the updated base tune back into the ECM results in a "hang" where the write never completes
5) Truck now will not start
6) Reinstalled recovery tune to restore truck operation
7) HPT stated they could not connect to their ECM when attempting to write that tune
8) HPT recommended a dealer flash to bring it back to stock.

that is where we left it, its up to SIL to take it to the dealer to get that done.

That sucks. I hope I don't have to go to dealer and pay them. SMARTY should not be able to say they leave no trace, when it obviously does. I'm sure many people buy their product because of this claim.

So Smarty got back to me and wants to charge me $120 for a clean file. This is bull Sh#$. It will be my goal to go on every forum and tell people my story to not buy Smarty if you ever plan to upgrade. Thats BS that they claim one thing and then when its not true they will charge you to fix what they claim should not happen.

Odd , I switched to Hptuners from smarty and didn’t get the locked ecm code. But I do have pod smarty and not the jr. wouldn’t think that would make a difference. Not sure how much the dealer would cost in your area but , it might be cheaper for them to flash the ecm. I believe my dealer charges 60$ but that was a few years ago .

I'm going with HP Tuner because I already had the tuner for a LS build. I heard efi has the same problem not reading the ecm after smarty also.

Try updating the Smarty to the latest version if it is not there yet. If that doesn't work just pull an image with the Smarty loaded if it will. That has worked for me multiple times and even saved the delete PIDs on a 6.7.

I will try updating the smarty, but what do you mean pull an image?

If you hook up HP Tuners it should grab the image that is in the ECM at that point whether stock or tuned. That work on a 3rd Gen 6.7, have not tried it on a 5.9 because the uninstall always unlocked the ECM.

I'm still a little lost. When I plug HP Tuner in and try to read the ECM it says fail. I don't know what you mean by "image". I'm guessing thats the term for what the tune is on the ECM? It pulls the VIN off the ECM. I been reading more and am worried about bringing to the dealer, if I can even find a dealer to re-flash back to stock.

An image is the currently loaded ECM configuration which contains the VIN. The image is saved as file for transport and manipulation. Essentially when it is on a computer or SD card or tuner it is a file, once it is installed on the ECM it is referred to as an image.

No idea why it is locking the ECM image like that, might be something in the OS of the Smarty is wrong or the existing image it has is out of date. What Smarty is loading is all pulled form Tech Authority to get the latest up dates to the ECM files then modified by the box tunes. If all else fails updated the handheld to the latest revision and try agian.
