I have a ‘96 3500 dually. No performance parts besides air intake and intake manifold. And it only has 105k miles on it. And it seems like my transmission is slipping into overdrive. It shifts pretty normally before I hit overdrive, but sometimes it will rev up and abruptly shift into od. It’s a lot worse lately slipping about every time I hit overdrive. I don’t know if it’s electronics related. Or my tranny going out. I know when I got my trans fluid changed he said there were a lot of aluminum bits in the pan. So my trans is probably on its way out. But I expected it to last more than 100k. Just wanted some thoughts?

Hey there, I have a 96 dually as well, automatic. I have had a problem with the truck shifting out of overdrive while driving. It is very annoying as the rpm's shoot up after it falls out and I have to baby it until I can get it to engage again.

I've heard replacing the TPS has helped people and it's easy to do. I plan on doing that to rule it out at least.

Yeah, I replaced my tps sensor not too long ago. What I did was took it out and cleaned it a little and put it back in nice and tight. It was kind of loose when I took it off, not sure if that had to do with it. And it seems to have solved it for now. Just hoping my trans keeps holding up 😂 I wanna mildly build my trans eventually but I hope this one lasts me a while longer

When I bought my 95 3500 it had 56k on it. It started shifting in and out of OD. The tranny shop told me the rear pump was shot. I suspect it was used to tow in OD without the owner noticing it shifting constantly.

If it shift to 4th gear and just slips, then your overdrive clutches are worn/burned or the overdrive piston retainer, piston seals or piston itself is damaged.

There is no rear pump on these RH/RE transmissions. To me it sounds like TPS sensor fault or overdrive solenoid fault.

Yeah a lot of trans shops try and take advantage of us Cummins guys. They know we expect problems with our stock trans 😂 but it seems to have just been my tps sensor. No more problems since then.
