There is tag on the top left side of the motor (drivers side), if it says 325HP that should be the 2004.5 if I'm not mistaking. Also the dealer told me if it's niosy it's an 2004 if it's fairly quiet it;s a 2004.5. I wondered that myself fopr a while, I have an 04.5 myself. :beer

Quickest way for a non CA truck is to walk up to it and look at the exhaust. Look forward of the muffler there will be a cat on the 04.5. No cat on the 04.

Valve cover label: 04.5 = 325
04 = 305, 250 or 235

Build date, MOST 04.5 have a build date of 1/04 or later.

isnt it like 92% of all " 04 " models have the 325 horse motor?
only 8% or so of " 04 " models are the early motor.

That is an 04.5, some might consider it an 05 depending on where the lift pump is.

Approx. 50% of 04's are 305. Trucks started being built 2nd week in July. From then until December 31st all CTD's were either the Cali SO or the 305. From Jan 1st to the end of June all CTD's were 325HP regardless of Cali or not.

a quick check is to look for a cat.

sticker on drivers side valve cover 325hp = 2004.5 / 305 = 305hp
cat = 2004.5/325hp
4" turbo back exhaust = 2004.5

I realise it has been awhile since any one has done a post on this old subject, but i just bought my 04 4 months ago.
any how this thing being called the "cat" does that mean catalitic converter, and if so is it the rather short round can, that is right before the enomous muffler

Yes, if you have a canister before the muffler you have an 04.5 and that is the catalitic converter or cat for short.
