side cover gasket? You must mean the tappet cover gasket? If so i may be mistaken, but i think you have to remove the vp and take off the intake horn, and everything else in your way. If it were me looking at the truck i would make him fi it, or take enough off the price to go have it fied, thats just my .02

that is what the guy told me, but i called him back and asked him where the leak was actually coming from and when he told me i knew for sure it was the timing cover gasket, it is leaking out of the bottom right corner of the engine in the front, but it is a pretty easy fix, pull the radiator and take off the pullies needed

Ok, the there are 2 front cover gaskets. One is the tin cover on the front. Its easy, just take off the fan, belt and idler pulley.

The second is between the gear case (aluminum thing the gears ride in) and the block. That is a BIG repair. Have to pull the radiator, CAC, ac condensor, bumper, wipers, cowl, cam. It sucks.

The tappet cover is behind the IP. You can leav it on but its easiest to pull the VP. Take everything off that side of the engine.

Side cover gasket is tappet cover gasket.

Maybe it's just the puke bottle making a mess? The mess would be on the driver's side. Same side as the tappet cover.

I'd be tempted to trace the oil forward and up to make sure. Forward due to airflow affecting the movement, and up, due to gravity.

It's kinda hard for me to imagine the gasket going bad unless someone had it off. Or TRIED to have it off.

The side cover sucks, most of my friends have closer to 300,000 on it before they needed it, and they had a dealer do it since it was so difficult, and time consuming. I'd be REALLY sure before I tore into it that the location was the cover....
And how bad is the leak, like a drip, or drizzle?? If a drip, I wouldn't worry about it....unless you're OCD, and need a spotless engine...:lol4:

i went and looked at the truck and it turned out to be a piece of , the pics he sent were old and it was hammered. he said it just like drips out. it turns out that it leaked 3COURTS A DAY. im not even considereing it anymore, i dont see you leaking that much oil with just a bad gasket, it must have a cracked block or something way more major

A little off topic, but i was just wondering why an HO injection pump out of an 02 dodge wouldn't work in a 99, my buddy had to by a new injection pump in his 99 through industrial injection and they told him that the HO pump wouldn't work

The time zones are 98-00, and 01 and 02 for 2nd genes.... The engines are neither wired, nor remotely the same when it comes to those things, it probably would work for an 01 HO, but not for a 99.....

Where is this truck, and how much was he asking?? Details... it may be worth it to get the truck, and drop a new/used engine in it:confused013:... and yeah....drip......drip......... drip....(okay)..... GLUG.......GLUG>>>>>GLUG....very bad!!!:lol4::hehe:

Anybody have torque specs for those side cover bolts? AllData is not showing them. How about a pic?! Mine was taken off by the rebuilder and neither of us thought to notice how the bolts were arranged, either.

18 ft lbs on the bolts. On the bolt arrangement, there should be 2 studs/threaded spacers. Those 2 are the top mounting holes for the ECM.

Actually, there was three on mine. I was able to search and find some pics on the TDR and then guesstimated where they all went. I found the bottom mounting hole for the ECM and split the difference for the top two. In the pics I looked at there was also some weird thing that didn't look familiar to me mounted on the far right side of the cover. I start putting the rest of it together today so I guess I'll figure it out soon!
