Thank God I bought a cheap commuter car this weekend or I'd be walking to work tomorrow. I walked outside this morning to see a good size pool of milky oil under the truck that is running down the sector shaft of the steering box. I didn't have the time to crawl under it and see exactly where it's coming from but I guess that explains my growling sound in the steering/brakes on really cold days.

Since I've got time now to work on my truck since it's not a DD. I've been considering doing a 3rd gen box vs. the Borgeson box since it's so much $$$. I know I'll need to get new hoses made and adapt the steering shaft to the 3rd gen box some how. I'll also replace the pump if necessary and reseal the vacumm pump while I'm at it.

What's your opinion?

Mine started blowing out oil out the sector shaft seal too. Bought a Red Head.

I guess I could have replaced the seal but that would probably a temp fix

I had tore down a old steering box from my 81 chevy 4x4 and it has two seals on the sector shaft. Same sagnaw box. The Dodge box has only one seal and is not made to last as long as older boxes were. You can tell it could have been made with two seals also

90% of all steering box failures are cause from oversized tires. 209K and rock solid. No leaks no issues. Tight steering yet. But I only run 235's or 265's for tires.

10% of these failures from the owner not flushing power steering system every 30k miles. Remember the power steering system has no filters and the fluid does break down just like engine oil and debris starts flowing. Then seals and shafts get ruined.

The Borgeson box isn't that much. $400 or so. How much will it cost to do a conversion?

If you are including the cost of a steering shaft in the Borgeson price, don't. It is absolutely not needed. Grinding a little flat spot on the input shaft is very easy, even tells you how in the directions that come with the box, and only takes about 2 minutes. Then the stock shaft slips right on.

This box and the '99 hd steering are must do's IMO.

I've heard some pretty bad stories from owners that used the borgeson box lately, it'd like their quality went down hill.

Carbon, how much did they quote you for a quicker rotation box?

Really? What stories?

I've had mine in for around 2 years now and it has to be one best thing I've done to it.

Well a Luke's Link for the track bar and four new ball joints, and i am very happy with the steering on my Ram.
I just hope you guys just don't start throwing parts at your front end to fix it. Do some checking, you will be able to see the play in the bad parts.
Oh I also replaced the factory OEM shocks with Bilstein 5100, not for steering, but just a little extra bounce when towing my 5er. Dang junk shocks only lasted 256,000 miles!

I sent a message to the website that has the conversion bracket and steering box Tejas tj mentioned, through the info link on that site. Asking for more info on the kit he sells. That website has almost no info on the products they sell.

Anyway, sent it last night, have not heard back but I will report when I do. I also suggested they stop by this site as I am sure a lot of people would like to know about his kit as an option for steering upgrades.
