I have an older truck than yours but the same solid axle creature. Earlier this summer I requested the shop to align the truck to the Thuren specification as I was tired of the wander down the highway. It would flat out wear a person out on a longer drive. They aligned it to the high side of the factory spec. I gave them the benefit of the doubt (good local reputation) - and tried it for a week. NO GOOD! I went back and insisted on the exact spec. They did - the truck has never been more pleasant to drive down the road. The truck has 90k miles and many newer parts in the front end. I have replaced many parts on my own in search of better steering - I bet much of this could have cleared up years ago with the correct alignment approach.
I would let the dealer piddle with looking for worn parts, bad tire, etc... but I would also have the discussion about the alignment specification.

You guys are not alone. Ordered my '16 dually, considerable wear on the Nexans at 12,000 miles.....totally shot and replaced at 25k. Put the high dollar Michelin's on and replaced the fronts at 55k to Coopers and just replaced the rears at 62k. The good news is the tire place got me $75 per tire from Michelin warranty so that eased the pain. I had the dealer check alignment at 12k and tried to have them replace tires with no luck. It blows my mind that this truck can only get 25-30k miles out of a set of tires....absolutely ridiculous but what do you do? Totally love the truck though but my 2002 F350 dually did not have this issue?

MY 2017 F-350 dually was not wearing the front tires at all in 13k miles. It had Michelin LTX AT2 but I don't really think the tire choice matters. The truck either wears out tires or it doesn't.

In my case, the left front is doing a lot better, wearing much more evenly. That's why I feel this is an alignment issue. The truck goes in tomorrow. I'm going to make it very clear my concern is the worn out right front tire and the truck pulling to the right. I want the truck to go straight down the road and I want the steering wheel perfectly centered.

trover, I wouldn't let them weld the D link until it's aligned to your satisfaction unless you're cool with a crooked steering wheel for however long and steering that is potentially not centered.
First, tire wear problem. Good luck with the dealer techs and I mean that in a kind way, but anyway. Get alignment (caster, camber (not adj, but possible bent axle), toe and center the steering wheel) then when it's to your satisfaction, let them do the recall.

Otherwise I can imagine the conversation going my like this...
You... "You welded my steering and it still is eating a tire and pulls to the right like an old tow truck."
Them..."Mr. Roverman, I'm sorry, we can't doo anything, we just welded yer steering shut. Uhh, you can talk to my supervisor but he's not here now, out taking his GED classes so he can learn himself about cars n stuff."

So here is an interesting question - the dealer acknowledges my right front is basically junk from the shoulder wear, but they are going to charge me to mount and balance and swap sensors with the spare. In some ways I feel like their truck was defective and wrecked the tire and I shouldn’t have to pay. But they can argue the alignment issue occurred because of use.

Anyway, they adjusted the toe only and stated everything else is fine. I had them grease the front driveshaft and they are not charging me for that.

Been waiting for 2.5 hours in the waiting room now.

Get the alignment printout.
Aside from toe, which I do believe will cause tire wear, pay attention to camber and caster too. Been a few of these with bent axle housings that had bad camber (cant adjust it out either) and positive caster should be within a couple 1/10ths of a degree side to side and between 4-5 degrees.

After 3.25 hours, I was able to get back on the road for the hour drive home.

No alignment printout was available, apparently. I did not push the issue because after sitting in a horribly uncomfortable chair for that long, I just wanted to leave. Plus the service advisor (she) was extremely pleasant and professional. I think having nice younger ladies up front could be a strategy to mitigate angry customers.

So, they performed the recall - found the jam nuts weren't tight enough, measured and found the drag link adjuster to be OK, and welded it.

They greased my front double cardan joint for free

They dismounted the spare and RF tire, swapped them, and re-mounted both. They did not bother to check tire pressures as the new RF has 80psi while the passenger side has 72psi.

They stated on the printout my crankshaft seal has a slight seep which does not qualify currently as a warranty claim but they advised to check it at each service. At least it is noted now.

They noted the toe was out and they adjusted. However, the blamed the RF tire wear on "not rotating tires." I'm puzzled on that one - the truck has 6 tires, and only one is worn. Somehow rotating would have cured the cause of that? I think not. It just would have helped wear all the tires.

On the upside, the truck tracks straight down the road now, and the steering wheel is centered. However, the RF has considerably more tread than the LF and a little more pressure. Hopefully it stays fine.

Just had my 18 delivered to my home town (I am currently deployed to Afghanistan till OCT), I had it sent to my buddys house as he is the lead service tech at a local dealership by me. He took it to work to go over everything, and look everything over. It has 3 recalls...one being the Drag Link.

I advised him that I did NOT want the welded drag link as this will make it NOT adjustable. I already have Thuren coil springs 2.75", adjustable track bar, sway bar, tires/wheels, and shocks heading to the house. So it makes NO sense to have this welded "now" prior to me installing these parts just to have to have the alignment redone when I get home in October.

He told me that his boss would NOT allow a vehicle to leave the dealership without the "FIX" being done, and I told him that this is unacceptable...he advised me to call FCA so I did...

FCA told me that they are no longer reimbursing any Synergy parts as they are not MOPAR, she advised me to find a OEM replacement "Mopar" part, I told her "if there was a MOPAR part available we wouldn't be having this discussion". After 1hr29 mins on the phone....She told me that anything prior to the recall coming out was able to be reimbursed and now since there is a recall they will no longer reimburse aftermarket parts. Furthermore, she stated that if I DECLINED the weld fix at the dealer, it would be noted in the system, and they would 100% not reimburse me for any parts to fix this. Basically they backed me into a corner and said you HAVE to get this done in order to get your truck out from the dealership.

Luckily my buddy said he would NOT weld it, and just Loctite the hell out of it for me and we can revisit the drag link once I add my new parts. I just think this is a crock of S*** as there is no replacement part and the only solution they have is to provide a NON adjustable drag link bush fix...this simply does NOT work for me.

It is my understanding that dealers are, by law, not allowed to sell vehicles that have open recalls. They are required to perform the recall prior to delivery. That is why it is a big problem for them when a recall is announced but no parts are available to perform it: they cannot sell the vehicles that are on their lot that have that open recall.

So I looked under my truck last night to see what they did. Very sloppy welding job, and shot some black paint just over each nut and weld. Couldn't be bothered to put a piece of newspaper or rag behind; they oversprayed on to the oil pan and cross member.

I asked them to grease the front driveshaft double cardan joint. I didn't crawl under far enough to see if they did, but what is the grease all over the radius arm bushings and the tie rod? Is this a normal spot to grease?

They probably oiled up the adjusting sleeve on the tie rod and the nuts on the caster adjusters. Totally unnecessary and sloppy and they could have wiped off the excess.

I'm guessing if you look at the grease point on the driveshaft it will be a complete mess and you will have no idea if any grease actually got into the joint.

I believe that we have now reached reason number 2,847 not to let a dealer touch our vehicles.
