Hello everyone, this is my first post other than telling the mileage on my trucks in the other post. I have two dodge 2500 4x4s. One 12v 1996 and one 24v 2000.

The 2000 had a dash fire, the 1996 is now KNOCKING big time. It started as a kind of rattle, then has progressed to a knock. Oil pressure reads fine, trucks runs fine but knocks the bejesus out of something. RUns up with idle, have plenty of power. I thought it was a rod or something to my UNTRAINED ear. My buddy thought it was torque converter or something. My other friend thought it was the engine.

We're all idiots so I don't trust any of our judgements.

If it is a rod, does that mean a full, out of truck rebuild? If so, any recommendations on a good rebuild kit and supplier.

Also, the $64K dollar question. I do anesthesia for a living so I'm fairly intelligent as it goes. I have a ton of crap in my shop because I like shopping. With that said, is a rebuild something a novice can do or is it unthinkable.

I've read many posts of the years but haven't needed to EVER post anything of my own. Now I'm in trouble. YOu guys are always talking about things I know nothing of, therefore I'm weary to try to rebuild myself....but the challenge seems welcoming.

Also, could I rebuild the 24v and put it in my 96? I thought it would need a different computer and things so I never tried. THe engine in the 2000 was running fine prior to the underdash fire. Actually a small fire but the trucks been parked since.

Thanks for any and all help.
Cheers, Mark

think I'll part the 00 and 96 2500's out....

I think I'm just going to part them out. It's a shame cuz the 96 is in really good shape. Any needs out there, the 96 is gray and the 2000 is white.

So many choices! I'd part out the 2000, and use the money to rebuild the '96. Or get a cab for the 2000 and sell the '96.
BUT, the first thing I'd do is get it to a mechanic and find out the problem. If it's simply a rod knock, a rebuild kit is pretty cheap. It may be the torque converter or flywheel.

when was the last time you changed the fuel filter? If your fuel transfer pump spring is weak they will knock (sounds like a down lifter in a 350 chevy or light rod knock) when the filter gets a little clogged.

Also some back story helps, how do you drive it, oil change intervals, MILES, ect.

My bet is you have a bad injector.
If it knocks at idle loosen each injector line at the injector one at a time listen for the one that doesn't make a change in engine sound..
