Has anybody ever replaced the seal clear on the outside of the axle closest to the U-Joint on the passenger's side? I guess mine is out cuz it's slingin oil all up inside the wheel. I was just wondering how hard it was to do.

you have to pull the axle shafts [inner and outer], which means brakes and brg have to come off.

which also means now is the time to do ujoints and ball joints if you havent recently done them.

pull the selector off. once you work the slider out you can pull the inner axle out.

drive the seal out and clean out the housing.

installing the new seal is the hard part. i made a spreader tool with some 1/2" all thread,
a race driver kit and some nuts and large washers. you dont have much room to work in so you cant tap the seal in with a hammer.

i have some old brg races that i use to fit the seal body and not booger the rubber lips of the seal.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but there is no seal on the outside of the axle, just the inner ones by the diff. My passenger side one is oiling up the inside of my tire as well.

Sorry, I thought you meant the very end of the axle. Mine does have the disconnect and the seal there.

Well I'm talking about whatever seal is supposed to keep the fluid from coming out the passengers side of the axle. Like someone else mentioned it's oiling the inside of my tire as well.

Just make sue if it is the oil coming out past the axle or is it the grease coming out of the hub and bearing assembly? If it is the hub and bearing you need to replace the assembly. Look close at it and see where it is coming from.

Ok so Ive started tearing my front axle down to replace the seals. I've got the hub and brakes off but I can't get the steering knuckle off. I have the nuts off the studs and I've beat around on the knuckle but it won't budge. Any thoughts?

why are you taking the knuckles off?

you dont need to unless youre doing the balljoints.

i use a big 4lb+ hammer and a solid alum slug, pound on the axle C around were the ball joint is on the side as hard as you can. then on the outer diaginal face of the knuckle strike down. leave 1 ball joint nut on just a couple of threads.

Well I plan to change ball joints along with this seal. When I started this project I was under the impression that the seal came out the end of the axle. Now I have the axle tore down and it looks like it's gotta be pushed out into the diff. Or how exactly is it supposed to come out?

I'm not necessarily a mechanic so please bear with me.

On my 99, the seal was right there once you pulled hub off and removed the axle shaft.
Well this seal is up in there a ways right next to the CAD... Has anybody had any experience with parts from Quad4x4? They have a set that has seals and all the tools needed to replace both sides. I may just pick up that set to finish with.

I got my seals from Napa and made a long slide hammer using a piece of all thread. Be careful starting the seal into the housing. It is pretty easy to bend it! I had to use a flapper wheel on the very edge of the seal to get it to start straight.

You do not need to pull the "steering Knuckle" (ball joints) Just pull the axle out through the hole where the hub and bearing comes out.

I am thinking about purchasing the same kit, unless I can find a 02 Non cad axle first. I have heard good things about the kit, but do not have any personal experience with it.
