what has anyone heard about the urban legend of putting fine cut saw dust in a rear differential with gear oil in order to increase the longevity?

I would stick with a good full synthetic gear oil. A little more than sawdust, but I feel it works better than regular oil and saw dust.

:hehe::hehe::hehe:

If sawdust is the key, then why add oil at all??:rof

I heard they used to put sawdust in as a temp measure to quiet gears down so they could sell a vehicle. I don't see it oiling, I don't care how fine it is. In the end, it's all sludge...:hehe::hehe:

the "sawdust trick" isn't meant for longevity,...it was something that used car salesman did to fix issues with vehicles(quiets noisey trannies, diffs, etc)...

basically they would do it to get a cluncker off the lot,....which screwed the new owner in the long run....

So....my recommendation,....DON'T EVEN THEN ABOUT IT!

This is more along the lines of what ive heard.... I guess I should have rephrased my question...? Either way, I was just curious if anyone had used this in an attempt to keep their baby on the road. Im sure now with the plethora of sarcasm that their wont be anyone chiming in to admitt they've used it.:buttkick:

A book published in 1939 titled "The Grapes of Wrath" written by Jon Steinbeck made reference to this being normal practice among business men selling junkers that didnt make it more than 50 miles to farmers who were kicked off their land by the banks(the cops did the kicking, the banks gave the order)
Over 200 thousand souls were kicked off their land during this time period and a lot of them bought the cheapest car available to get out west. Pure ingenuity and the will to survive got these vehicles to their destination. Unfortunately, only to be exploited by corporations falsly inflating the price of canned fruit while paying the displaced midwest farmers pennies a day. Whole families starved to death. This happened in the united states. Its part of our history. Used car sales men really used to put sawdust in noisy diffs, among other things, to trick ignorant farmers out of all the money an entire family could raise sometimes.
Used car sales men have always been snakes, imo
