(2003 - 2004) (DR) Dodge Ram Pickup Truck
(2005) (DH) Dodge Ram Pickup Truck

Note this recall applied only to the above vehciles with a 5.9 diesel engine ("6" or "C" in the 8th VIN Position and an automatic transmission (sales code DGP or DG8)

Subject:
in certain circumstances when a driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the "Park" position and leaves the engine running, the vehcile may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable. Un intended rearward movement of a vehcile could injure those in and or neer the vehcile.

Repair:
an Out-of-Park alrm system must be installed on the vehicle. The alarm system will beep the horn and flash the headlights and shift indicator if a driver tries to exit a running vehcile without fully placing the shifter into the "Park" position.

The low down:
This is basically a program flash and should not take long to do.

The owners of the applicable vehicles will be issues the letter in the mail March 20th 2006. If you go in for Dealership service it will eb noted on you VIN summary that the Service Advisor will look at and advise you your vehcile is applicable.

This is something they must have already updated for the 2006 models.

Today at lunch I hooked up to my trailer here at the dealership and towed my Jeep to the house. When I am backing up to the trailer I tend to set the E brake so when I get the trailer ball just where I want it it does not roll back (taking up slack in the drive line). I did this today and left the truck in Drive and the Ebrake set. I opening the door and the horn started honking and the lights were flashing. I wasn't expecting that and it scared the crud out of me.

But anyhow this is what you will expect when the recall is performed.

I wonder if this is something Dodge had decided to do or if it is mandated from the government and the other truck makers are having to do the same???

Will this be a mandatory Recall..

In other words if I bring my truck into a dealer for service or warranty work will they do this or can I tell them not to do it..?

And if they should do it without notifying me can it be reversed..?

Gerry
The program can not be reversed once it has been added. I am not at work right now but in the morning I will find out for you if it is a mandatory recall. Some recalls are for client satisfaction and some ofe for safety. This one is due to safety so I think it will be mandatory but I will find out.

You may however be able to request that this recall not be done and sign a waver to release liability. I will find that out too.

Thanks for the questions.

Gerry what you will have to do is when you go into the Dealership make sure your advisor knows that you do not want the recall done. The advisor will have to write the recall on the the repair order as you have declined the repair. You will then have to sign and date the repair order stating you decline...

This is also something you will have to stay on top of because if you forget to tell them everytime you dont want it done or if someone else takes the truck in and does not tell them they will perform the recall without telling you.

***After it is done, it cane not go back!***

i had that problem when i bought the truck.. i noticed the reverse light is always on when i shift to park.. what i did i took out the cover and adjusted the cable since then never happend again
Since it can not be undone once it is done I wonder what recourse someone would have if the Recall was done after telling the dealer not to do it...

Also I wonder if any future re-flashes that might be done would include this recall??

Geezzzz.. I think I wonder and worry to much sometimes....

If it gets done with out you knowing, there is not a way to reverse it. Even getting a new body control modual will usually have the updates.

More that likely later updates will include this in the software, Sorry but this is a safety recall and the governent has thier hands in this one...

I had this happen also. I was fueling up , had left my door open , was standing at the pump , and in the doorway of my truck when it started to coast backward. Prior to that , I had noticed the back up lights on when I was unloading equipment from my trailer.
It has not repeated it since then , but I make sure the park brake is set when I leave it running.
I always set the brake and block the trailer wheels when I'm loading and unloading.
I would prefer they fix the issue of the truck "bumping" out of park rather than putting an idiot alarm on.

:agree2:

Funny, this just happened to me. The stupid alarm wouldn't have sounded until I was out of the truck (when it went into reverse) wrecking my vehicle and an 05 F150.

Thanks again Dodge. If I could get a Cummins in a Chevy with a warranty I would never look back.

EDIT: Has anyone had damages that we know of other than myself? I'm halfway tempted to sue the bastards right now. The indicator said P and I got out. If it was IN REVERSE, the door would have knocked me down! Instead, it waited about 15 seconds, dropped into reverse and seriously damaged this F150 and did some not-so-nice damage to my truck.

Here's a link to another forum where I posted pictures and the story.

Oh yeah, the damage to the other truck was $5400. And to ice the cake, the insurance company isn't paying (long story).
From what I understand is this is unique to the 05 model year.
They have it already installed on the 06 model.
Everytime Iv taken my 05 into the dealer, they ask if I want it done and I refuse.
I always put the E brake on anyway whenever I get out of the truck.
how can insurance really not pay for something like that? Ugh I hate insurance companies. maybe the dealer could help you out. but probably not. they usually suck too.
i got the recall on my 04 a while back and never took it in.....im glad i didnt i always use my ebrake anyways
Yep, they aren't paying. 5383.84 worth of damage. I am suing the insurance company.
Park alarm

Thanks for the info. This site is great foe us newbies.:beer
see u do learn something new every day. my truck did this also and i couldnt figure out what was going on. this is why i stay up so late reading on this forum.
The NHTSA investigated and decided there was no cause for a recall since there weren't that many injuries. Wow, they basically say Yes, there is a problem, but we aren't going to make them recall because it is not cost-effective for the company. It's a financial balancing act between what the NHTSA sees the comapany is paying in lawsuits versus the cost of the recall. The government agency is just pre-arbitrating the problem.

I will not own another of the newer trucks. I am selling mine and getting a 12v.
Thanks for the info guys. I just bought a 2005 quad cab and I thougt I was going crazy and pushing the panic button accidently. I would open the door and the alarm would start to sound. I now watch for the little box to appear around the park indicator and sometimes have to jiggle the shift lever on the column a bit to make sure it's in park. Why is this? It would seem that this is a serious problem. Is it as simple as adjusting a cable to make sure your in Park?
