S&B Intake Horn Installed...my thoughts...

Im not impressed to put it simply. Installation sucked as far as im concerned. It comes with 2 studs and 2 bolts to mount it to the head. You are instructed to double nut each stud and torque the stud by turning only the top nut...then remove the nuts and do the other stud. Maybe it was just me but everytime I went to remove the nuts after tightening the stud would turn out. I ended up lifting the heater grid and using vise grips to tighent them down where there were no threads to mess up. The wiring mounted to the rear of the stock intake is removed and there is nowhere on the s&b to mount them...they supplied a zip tie. The dipstick doesnt mount in the same place so you have to remove the lower mounting bracket for the dipstick...shove the dipstick towards the rear and bolt it to then intake leaving the lower brace doing absolutley nothing. Seems like it could have had a tab in the proper spot on top to mount it correctly. The 5 pretapped holes....pffff....take your time putting the plugs in....cheesy threads and one of the ports was tapped slightly crooked...the plug isnt flush(and I didnt crossthread it...it went right in). As for performance and egt's...I cant feel or see a difference. Ive read threads where people say they have had great results but for me I feel I threw money away. Im by no means bashing s&b as a whole..I have their air filter kit and like it. Just my thoughts...take them for what you feel they are worth.

I had bad luck as well since my truck was used for the original piece that was made of plastic. IT BLEW UP ON THE DYNO and left a nice ding in my hood. They never fixed it. I still have their cold air kit since it really does have some of the best filtering on the market. I have an ATS Arc Flow by the way now.

The install does take alittle longer than some due to the fact that they dont just run a stud through the intake which restricts flow. But I think the extra 20-30 min is worth having a smooth flowing intake.

Ok...I feel I have to add this since I was pretty negative when I started the thread. I towed with the horn for the first time today. Before install at 1900 or so rpms in high gear floored I could hit 28 or 29 psi. Now..same gear, same rpm it will shoot right up to 38 or 39 at 1900/2000 rmps. So its obviously flowing a lot more air in there to give me 10 more lbs of boost at the same rpm. With the extra boost my egt's lowered probably 100 or so. I was going up a decent grade ....which I have towed up before... with the edge on 2(tow) floored and it would be at 39 or 40 psi and 1320 or so egt's. Before I could have gone to 1400 or more...I used to let out of it before I hit 1400 and try to keep it in the high 12s. As for the seat of the pants feel while empty...its hard to tell the difference....to me anyway. But like I said...there is a difference while towing.

What is the s&b made out of now if not plastic like they use to be? I'm curious because I'm torn between s&b cfm+ and the ats arcflow

When your doing the studs, use a standard open ended wrench and turn the bottom nut as if you were tightening it. It will release the top one and not change the torque spec on the stud. Just FYI for future stud related installs.

I like my S&B. Install was pretty simple, 30-40 minutes.

My truck definitely feels better right off idle, more responsive. EGT's seem to be slightly lower, but need to do some more testing in that area.
