this part sounds scary. maybe we wont be able to load MM on it after the update?

Secure Bootloader software
If the Engine Control Module (ECM) does not have a calibration installed, or has an
unapproved calibration installed then the ECM will be in a Read Only Memory (ROM) boot
state. The ECM will have power but the lack of approved software will not allow the vehicle
to be started and driven. No further diagnostics of the ECM will be available at this time.
This code will be cleared and issue resolved when the ECM is updated with the correct
approved calibration. Refer to the DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > Service
Information for more detail.
DTC U1601 set outside of the dealership with a no crank (towed in), no start condition
caused by unauthorized (up-rate) software will NOT be covered under the terms of the
warranty.
DTC U1601 code may also be set when a legitimate flash is interrupted for any reason.

I do not like the sound of that at all.

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion the EPA is quietly turning the screws to them as well to shut out the entire tuning market?

I work in IT for a living and the way that reads to me is they are going to protect the ECM with some form of password/passphrase/encryption to prevent unauthorized use if the codes do not match upon key insertion to result with a no start and throw the U1601 code.

Hopefully they will use some algorithm that is based of the VIN so all it will take is finidng that formula. Hopefully H&S can chime in.....

Glad it doesnt apply to 2011's at least not yet.

I might have made it by the skin of my teeth, wife took truck in for oil change on the 3rd . Will have to wait till i get back from deployment to see if my MM still works, I hope so. In the meantime i told her not to take it to the dealer for anything.

just talked to the service manager. you can refuse the RRT if you sign a waiver everytime until your warranty is up. lucky me service checked my vin and its not on the truck yet so i get by on this one as long as they dont mess up my request.

I'm glade I was goofing off on CF at work today, had to bring the truck in for an o2 harness issues it had since new, requested that no updates be made without my consent. They respected my request and put it in their notes.

We're you able to get details on what it does in regards to our assumptions about locking the PCM?

I wonder if Chevy and ford are doing the same?
