Hey guys been a while since I have posted here, but I have a 2000 24V with a HX35(14cm W/G housing)/HT3B setup on it. Hot rod VP, ARP's, Farm Boy 200's, Airdog 150, TST powermax 3, and edge ez for timing in a 99 Superduty.

I put about 10K on it a couple years ago before pushing the headgasket out at the front of the head. Head had to be decked .010 to get it flat and put a .020 Cummins gasket in it with the same studs(my mistake). Well I have since put around another 40-45k on it with no problems except about a week ago towing a 18' car trailer pushing about 10lbs of boost all of a sudden I lost heat in the cab and the temp started to rise. Pull over to check it out and the stud between cylinders 3 & 4 is laying on top of the manifold split at the base of the threads that go into the block:banghead:

So I know, I should have replaced the studs, I am assuming that when I pulled the head the first time whatever ones had stretch on the front made it to the middle that time.

The truck has seen 70psi from time to time, but nothing at extended periods or probably not more than once every 3-4 months. It is mostly a daily driver that pulls my 32' trailer a couple times a month. Should I switch over to say Haisley Machines H-11 studs? It still has the stock valve springs that I should probably upgrade as well right? 110#? And I am most likely going to water/meth inject it now as well because it does get farily hot fairly quick when pulling hills which might have been a contributor.

I know it's my own fault but I guess I am looking for pointers on switching studs and valve springs.

Thanks,
-Matt

I can't say I've seen a stud do that on a street truck before. Only one stud did it? The cheaper arp studs will corrode from the coolant over time, that's about the only thing that would weaken them in my opinion.

Even then, that just makes them look ugly, doesn't weaken them much.

OP, did you use plenty of ARP lube when installing? What were the nuts torqued to? Was there debris in the bolt holes?
Sounds like some of the studs were stretched, which definitely will weaken them. Breaking at 10 psi is odd, though it can happen. Always good to measure studs you are reusing to make sure they are in spec. Personally I'd measure the ones you have and only replace the ones out of spec

Yeah, when I pulled over I couldn't believe what I was looking at.

Currently the truck is just sitting in my garage I haven't really felt like messing with it. I did not measure them when I went to put them back in. I definitely used plenty of lube both times when installing them. As far as torque? It's been probably 1-1/2 since I redid it, so whatever the torque spec was I believe is what I put it to. I just remember having to go in a redo the torque sequence back off, mark, torque etc I think 4 times before they stopped passing the last mark.

Is there a way to buy just since ARP studs instead of a whole new set?

Thanks,
-Matt

Yes, you can buy individual studs from ARP. Might as well get your injectors pop tested, I've heard of quite the range of pop pressures in FBD injectors

Alright guys thanks for the input. As far as valve springs go, is there any suggestions? Seems the consensus on the net are Hamilton 110# springs? How about push rods? Would 625's be a better idea or even needed for 70-75psi over the stock ARP's? I don't know why I didn't get into these things years ago when I built it! Remember it is a VP truck, although a hot rod. The truck hasn't been on rollers, and the tach conversion from the Cummins to the superduty has never worked since I installed it so I couldn't really say what RPM's I've ever had it to.

Check ok extreme studs. Just as strong as the ARP 625s but half the cost.

01 6 speed with a valair ceramic dual disc, DTT Assassin, DAP 175s 5in turbo back and Quadzilla and Smarty stacked with more to come

Has anyone used Extreme Studs? Doesn't seem to be much info out about them?
