Reverse Alarm - Disabling

36722 Views 24 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Dsljnki07ctd5.9
Does anyone know how to make the horn not honk when backing up with your door open. I back up to a lot of trailers and get the crap scared out of me when I am paying attention to that and take my foot too far off the brake pedal. Is it something I can take care of with the snip of a wire or do I need to take it to the dealership. Thanks Craig

Sure thing!

I haven't tried this myself, but the members here say the easiest thing to do is push the parking brake pedal down just a click or two. It is not enough to engage the brake, but supposedly it is enough to trigger the parking brake sensor, so the truck thinks the brake is engaged, and the horn won't go off when in reverse.

Also posted here was a more technical and permanent fix: "All you guys need to do is unplug the 2 wire plug next to the seatbelt (drivers side, 4 inches lower than where it buckles), then put a very small wire across the 2. Leave it in there and plug it back in. This will disable the reverse horn honk, the seatbelt light, and the seatbelt ding."
that also works for the daytime running lamps (if these trucks have them) or on whatever, itll shut them off...

please explain?
explain? umm...im not sure what the question is, but on any other vehicle with daytime running lamps, (the headlights turn on in the day) can be disabled by clicking the ebrake once or twice, without putting the brake fully on...and for some reason this disables them, if u didnt want them on for the time being, just the same for your rear alarm...
I tried the parking brake trick over the weekend on my neighbors '06. Pushed it in enough to where the light came on......

Results......HONK...HONK.....HONK.....HONK......
Well, another myth busted! :lol3:

You need to try the jumper on the seatbelt for us next.
Jakey's'01H.O., wasn't sure as to what "method" u were referring ... never noticed that before, thanks ... I've also noticed that the "daytimes" don't turn on now until the truck is put in gear ... I like that. With my '04 they were on all the time ... even in Park.
The "seatbelt jumper" works ... fooling the truck into thinking that your seatbelt is done-up ... easy to remove if needed ... haven't noticed any detrimental side-effects. I'm very grateful for this "fix" ... and so are the neighbors, lol :thumbsup

sounds like a good way to start a fire maybe lol:popcorn:
haha, yep that could be considered detrimental eh :lol2:
none of the above work on my '04 -- any other suggestions?
Have you tried jumpering the seatbelt wires? That should solve your issue.

As a test leave your seatbelt plugged in and open your drivers door and backup. If the horn does not honk then the seatbelt jumper should fix your problem. If it does honk we can try and come up with another solution for you.
As stated none of the above have stopped the horn on mine. I anxiously await the tip or trick that can. BTW the guy i bought it from took it to the dealership to make it do this the day before i bought the truck. If only i had known?
just to clarify, leaving your seat belt plugged in and opening the drivers door while backing up will cause your horn to honk?
Another solution is to put a relay on your horn wire, and drive it open with the dome light.

This will make it so your horn can not blow when any door is open. This may not be an ideal solution, but easy enough to implement. If this sounds like what you want to do, let me know and I can draw you up a wiring diagram.
Where are you located? Just about all of the downloaders that are available turn this feature off. If you can find someone close to you with a downloader, you just load it up and immediately return it back to stock. Problem solved. That would be the easiest way to do it.

Not sure if it matters to millertime_t1, but the only issue with this is the downloader may leave traces that your truck has been modified and the dealer could void your warrenty for no good reason if you need warrenty work. This is true even if returned to the programmers "stock" code.
I got bored, here is that schematic I mentioned if you need it.

Re alarm

I tried what you did yesterday on mine and fully expected to get jolted by the horn, but it didn't go off.

My Dad and I do a fair bit of towing, and have to back into some tight spots. That reverse alarm freaks folks out, and is nerve-racking as all get out.

Here's how I fixed it in my Dad's 06; they're kind of out of order, but I'll do my best to describe what I did:

These pictures are taken from the backseat floorboard

Picture 08 shows the seatbelt plug undone, behind it is the one that ties into the truck's harness, it's the splitloom and plug right behind it (it shows you where they're located under the seat)

Picture 03 shows what the inside of the plug looks like, it gave me an idea...

Picture 05 is my low-tech, simple solution, I noticed that the pins in the connector are just about right to fit a common spade terminal. I wrapped the connector with some small stranded copper wire I had leftover from another project to help the connector to fit more snugly over the pins in the connector. I also smooshed the sides down just a little to help snug it up a little more. You want it to make a positive connection.

Picture 07 shows the jumper plugged in. For insurance, I put a piece of 33+ tape over the end, and then a wrap around the plug to make sure that the jumper can't wiggle free and set off that blasted alarm again.

I started up his truck and put it in gear to make sure it works, it did.

Picture 09 is a pic of my Dad's new truck. He's very proud of it, and it looks great.

Thanks for sharing with me how to fix it, and I hope this helps someone else get theirs disabled, that horn honking bit freaks me out.
