My truck is white, and I usually take really good care of it but the past 4 months I've neglected it bad because of deer season and now I'm cleaning it back up and I've noticed a ton of scratches from small tree limbs !!! I've used scratch-out but it didn't really work so now it's time to go buy a buffer and really get after it ! None of the scratches are deep, their mostly clear coat scratches so what it the best 1 or 2 step polish I can get to get these out, or am I gonna have to wet sand the whole truck with 1000 grit and then buff to shine ??

I wouldn't wet sand it just yet. You'll be surprised what a good polish and a buffer can do. Just work in small spots at first. If you've never used a buffer before I would recommend a dual-action buffer vs. a rotary buffer. The rotary is a great tool in the hands of an experienced buffer, but novices have been known to burn through the clear coat with one. A d/a buffer will get out just about any scratch that won't catch your fingernail when rubbed across it.

I always used poorboy's products. They work really well in the sun and heat. They don't dry hard like some do. They are available at autogeek. You'll need something with some "cut" to it to get scratches out. I would recommend the SSR 2.5 or 3 depending on how bad your scratches are. You'll also need so pads for your buffer. When buffin out scratches you need a pad with some cut. For polishes and waxs a smoother pad.

There's a lot that goes into using a buffer. Just do some research and get what works best for you. FYI, I would always polish and wax after using a cutter like the SSR 2.5 or 3. Also, use the couponcode "detailcity" for 10% off at autogeek.

Good Luck!

If it's your first time using a "buffer", then I suggest you get a Dual Action Polisher. Meguiar's just came out with a brand new one in 2010 and its awesome, and will not burn through your paint. I personally have a Flex 3401 and love it as well. As for the scratches, I had the exact same thing on my 2005 White truck, from the exact same reasons you have them. I used Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and it took every one of them out with 2 passes. I highly recommend you try that with their yellow polishing 2.0 pad. My truck finished last step ready, meaning I went straight to wax as it did not leave any hazing or marring.

I have used a buffer before, actually I worked in a detail shop right out of high school, but that was 15 years ago.. I'm trying to find out what the best compound is I should use with a buffer.. I'm guessing a cutting compound, then go back with a polishing compound and then wax.. What are your reccomendations on a compound ?
