That's a nice cooler. Derale makes good stuff actually, so does Hayden. Those are budget high performance cooler brands the way I see it.

All that aside.. I like that design, it is shrouded around the fan, it's got the nice fittings, smooth lines, etc.. Looks like a quality item. I wouldnt hesitate to run it! ESPECIALLY if the price is in the budget..

It's on the bench, I haven't mounted it yet, but I'll post results when I do.

Derale 15800 forced air. The fan is reversible.
I added an inline temperature switch (AN setup) to automatically control the fan via an interposing relay. Power to the switch was picked up from a keyed source.

For plumbing, I cut into the return line from the front of the truck. I cut the line ~6" from where it enters the trans, loosened the fitting on the trans, then spun the hard line to point backward. Ran some good quality hose to the cooler.

Really nicely done. What temp thermostat did you use and how have the temps performed after install?
A little over a year ago the stock front cooler began to leak at the thermostat. When summer hit I was dealing with warm temperatures running down the highway empty (exceeding 200). I forced the t-stat to cooling in my 'brand new' sub-par trans cooler and it still heated up but took longer, leading me to believe that the stock equivalent cooler I had installed was nowhere near as efficient as the factory unit that was in there. The Derale was cheaper than another front cooler so I gave it a try.

The temperature switch is said to be a 180, but fluid temperatures via the OBD2 are closer to 200 before the fan kicks on. I cannot hear the fan in the truck, but can when standing next to the driver's door with the engine running. It moves a good amount of air. It has curbed my warm trans issue. I had another truck in tow on a flatbed yesterday, 101* with the A/C wide open. Typical rushhour 1-3 gear slinky. 206* is the highest I saw.

I am happy with the results.

And that's just a tube and fin cooler. A stacked plate would have really made you happy. Nice job all in all. Glad it made some difference at least!

I'm building an under-bed system for a customer right now using a Derale 15870 also. Their pans are not the greatest, but their coolers are very good. I'll post pics as the job progresses.
Jon, I bought the same cooler 5 weeks ago. 67,000 BTU seems like a beast of a cooler. I'll be installing it this weekend. No, I still don't have my truck back on the road; I've been lazy. :spank: But everything is done except the aux cooler. I replaced the factory cooler last night.

I'd like to see your installation when it done.

Here are some pics of the cooler system I'm building for a customer. I have not completed the wiring in these photos, but it will be controlled by relay, with the temp switch simply turning the relay on and off to control the fan. I will be finishing things up today, and I'll post results as soon as I do some testing and data gathering.

Here is the cooler (Derale 15870) and the bracket that I built to mount it to the frame.

Here is the bracket mounted to the frame.

And the cooler attached to the bracket. By mounting it on an angle, I was able to tuck the cooler, which is quite large) up and out of the way, with nothing hanging below the frame rail. It also tucks up nicely under the bottom of the cab.

And its associated plumbing. I used -8AN lines and fittings everywhere. The thermostat switch is on the inlet to the cooler, and will turn the fan on at 180 degrees and back off at 165 degrees. I will also have a switch in the cab so that the customer can manually turn the fan on at any time.

Nicely done...

So you're running that cooler exclusively, without the factory coolers. What temps are you seeing?
Yes sir, just the Derale alone. Just took the truck on it's maiden trip the other day, and only around a few blocks, so I can't comment on how well the cooler work yet.

Have a few little things, and one big thing (cracked transmission Case, new case will be delivered Friday) to do to finish the build. But I will post back here as soon as I have some good data on it👍
