I am new to diesel trucks and I love my truck. But during the winter it does take a little more time to warm up. When I mean warm up, I dont care about having remote start to heat up the cab, I am looking to just be able to start the vehicle and let it warm up for 5 minutes while I am getting ready for work.

Is there a remote start that takes into the account of the delay needed for the glow plugs to heat up?

Has anyone installed one on their rig?

I usually warm up 2-5 min depending on how cold it is.
Factory remote start on my truck is 10 or so min so it’s not “hurting” anything by design. Not to mention you can run it back to back (20 min) before it won’t let you repeat the cycle.

However,
I don’t push it until I drive it to temp

Yes it takes into consideration the delay in warm up.

No glow plugs. We have a grid heater.

Factory remote start will do what you’re asking.

Factory remote start, or any aftermarket system made in the last 20 years or so...

Welcome to 2019, pretty much any remote start will work.

You could also plug in the block heater to help the warm up process.

See, y'all telling him that "any" remote start will work, when he hasn't said what trans, he may have a manual, then not just any remote start will work, such as the oem.

I just finished my signature to show you what I drive. My build sheet states I have a block heater but I don't see a plug anywhere to plug it in?

Disregard I watched a video and just ran out there and found it.

I assume, dumb question here, if I plug it in it will make the winter so much easier to start and its better on the truck?

Do you know the wattage/amp pull while plugged in? This is a factory block heater. Is it continuous at all times or does it lower once it reaches a certain temp?

How do you all run the block heater? Do you just plug it in when you get home and leave it plugged in when your not driving? Do you setup a timer so that it will kick on around say 3 am and run until 7 to ensure your truck is warm?

I am a newbie diesel truck owner!

yes, its easier starting in winter.

720 watts i believe. continuous draw.

i plug my truck in before i go to bed, so its on about 8 hours . IF you use a timer, set it to run atleast two hours to warm up the truck. The water temp should be around 100 by that time, depending on weather.

Congrats on the new truck!

most aftermarket remote starts should have a feature to delay start up.

i have a DB3 installed on my truck. i set my delay for 15 seconds.

Hmmmm...never thought of a timer...
It'd be nice to have an on board trickle charger for when plugged in too.
Due to cost of electricity in our area most people run a timer and program it to power the vehicle for 2-4 hours. I also installed a Noco G3500 in mine. There was a thread or two on installing one on here.

Agreed, over a months time 700+ watts all night can add up to quite a bit of money. A $5 timer can significantly reduce that cost. You can also tell a tree hugger you’re helping the environment lol.

If your truck was not ordered with the cold weather package, it does not come with the cord, just the block heater. Get the cord on Amazon, simple install.

Yes below 0f cummins recommends it's use, and considers it mandatory at -20f

6.5 amps continuous

I run mine on a timer, plug it in when i get home and it comes on 2 hours before i leave for work

In the winter I plug mine in once the temps starting dropping below 20 degrees. It's plugged in all day at work, and as soon as I shut it off in the driveway. However, I also don't have to pay for the electricity to run it. I have a block heater, heating pads on the oil pan and transmission pan, and heated battery blankets all wired up to a 4-way, and routed out the front.

Getting OEM remote installed at the dealer was one of my first mods. Its very nice to have and doesn't start until the motor is happy enough to turn over. The range is good enough for me ~100 ft.
What did the dealer charge? It's just a module and changing the sales code?
