Been a hot minute since I posted on here and I wanted to pick some of ya'll's brains. The ole' Mega-Stein was down for a long time due to breaking the TCS Input shaft, I opted to rebuild the transmission myself following along with a very detailed YouTube video, ATSG Manual and Firepunks build process. Went back together with a Sonnax Billet Input, Firepunk rebuild kit, bearings, new low/reverse drum, new OD drum etc. All clearances and end play set to either ATSG spec or what Firepunk calls for.

The damage done, repairs and rebuild finished......Those billet shafts are sharp a F*ck!

Transmission has been great but I have two questions that I can't seem to find a solid answer too.

A) I installed an Edge CTS3 at the same time and have the Gear/TCL on screen so I can see what gear I am sitting in and lock up apply. I noticed, for example, when in Second gear at lower speeds if I let off the throttle and coast the truck the CTS3 will show the transmission go into 3rd or sometimes even 4th gear. When it's coasting and showing 4th gear with light throttle input it will shift into 3rd, with moderate to heavy input it will jump back into 2nd and then continue normal shift pattern all the way to 4th Lock-up. Does this sound normal? I am under the impression it is, truck doesn't drive any different than before the rebuild but I have one guy telling me that is not normal for these transmissions and another guy saying it is.

Video of point A -

B) I was experiencing a soft 2-3 shift prior to the rebuild, It's better now but I am still experiencing a soft 2-3 shift compared to the other shifts....Line pressure is 198 (I'm gonna lower it to 190 @ break-in service). TCS billet servo, accumulator, suncoast billet low/reverse servo and Trans-go shift kit. I did not change the metal rings on the TCS stuff because Firepunk didn't have it in stock at the time and they still looked new (paint still on rings). 9 Springs in direct drum and clutch clearances .75 by hand or .88 w/ air. Is there a problem or is this normal? I have read that 2-3 shift in these 48's can be soft to the point you don't even feel it shift at low throttle.

Thanks in advance for any help! The truck is far from being done but she has come a LONG way, I'm definitely confident DD'ing her now.

Your vid says adult content must sign in. Not sure what you’re trying to pull……🤣

I’ve never seen it change like you describe. Unless you’re just happening to notice when it’s supposed to shift like normal.

What?! Lol No clue why it's saying that, I'll check it maybe I have an option checked that I shouldn't. If it won't work right I'll upload it to YouTube.

That's the thing, prior to getting this CTS3 I never thought or noticed that it would shift to 3rd or 4th coasting. To me it just always felt normal, just like any other transmission, seeing the actual gear it's in threw me off and then to top it off this dude telling me it ain't right. Although it's not any different than the Ford 6 or 10 speeds we have at work, you can watch the gear indicator at coast/light throttle input & low speeds shift into 5th, 6th or even 8th to 10th and when you apply enough throttle it'll downshift to the respective gear.

How many clutches in direct? What size holes in separator plate?
6 Clutches, 6 Steels with a machined pressure plate and new snap ring set to Firepunks recommended spec

The trans-go kit was done prior to me owning this truck and I unfortunately did not measure the holes, only visually inspected them and they all looked good.

Did you use a wavy or flat snap ring on the direct pressure plate? The shift hole sizes may be a bit small. The wavy will soften it up. Was that lockup line pressure?

If you make the 2 to 3 faster it might start to show overlap symptoms. I run 155psi non locked 175 to 180 locked. I run fixed line pressure. I have 6 clutches in direct. It’s firm.

Flat snap ring, Yes Lock up, WOT

Never heard of fixed line pressure, this is the first transmission Ive ever rebuilt so I'm still learning. I wouldn't say I wanna make it faster, just would like to figure out why it's softer than the rest of my shifts. 1-2 bangs, 3-4 bangs Lockup grabs firm but lockup WOT bangs. 2-3 is more like a bump, you can still feel it just doesn't sound the dash is cracking apart. 🤣

Tv cable or motor?
Motor - Set to OEM spec
