Hey guys first post I’m pulling my engine this weekend to start the process of doing new rings and possibly pistons if I feel it needs them and I was curious what other wear items I should replace while it’s out that I can’t get to once it’s back in the truck or that would be easier to replace with the engine out of the truck so far I’m thinking: rings possibly pistons along with having the block honed and bored out if the cyclinder walls are scard rod bearings and thrust bearings all gaskets from top to bottom I already have done all 6 new injectors as well as connecting tubes truck has 290k on it no programmers of any such just a cold air intake and a straight pipe thanks

Are you going to deck the head? Valve seals wouldn't be a bad ideal.

The ring groove at TDC area is factor, and needs to be cleaned up or you will break the new rings.

Also, inspect the ring grooves in the pistons, they can develop a wear area and wide the ring groove, allowing the ring to twist and break.

Though boring and honing costs more, if the honing only cleans up the bore enough, you could get stock pistons vs overbored. Though even with the original pistons, and honing 0.010", the ring gaps are now larger and you'll have blowby there. File to fit rings woul be the way to go.

Also make sure you hone to the required surface that the new rings require for break in. Cast rings as an example, need a coarse surface compared to other options.

Why the rebuild??

Oil pump, oil relieve valve, rockers, known for galling, should be checked and/or replaced.
I would replace oil to water trans cooler on side of block if automatic, some how they always get damaged, cause issue later on.
