Hey guys, couple quick questions for those who have gone for the full billet trans. I’m looking at a Firepunk comp 1 or 2, or possibly a Muldoon full billet. Truck is an 04.5, just has a 4” straight pipe and Smarty S06 tnt-r, FASS 150, CAI. Future parts will be one of the holset turbos with bigger internals (I’m in CA and want to keep it simple) and injectors to go with, maybe 100 horse or something comparable. I’m lookin at 700hp if I’m real lucky on a max effort tune, seems there are guys doing 700 with the Holset Cheetah and the Stealth 64.

I gotta be honest, I’m still torn on spending 7-8k on a transmission, and not even sure if I really need the FULL billet, but part of me thinks just go for it while it’s out. 95% of the time, I drive the truck really soft and take really good care of it, I baby this thing, it’s my first diesel and I want to keep it for a long time. I’d like to be able to go to the track and let her rip once in a while. Maybe see what a boosted launch is all about and run a low 12 in a 7500 lb truck.

For those who have had full billets, is the valve body terrible for DD? Can you tow without banging a gear? Kinda leaning towards Firepunk really, but wondering about the valve body in the comp 2.

Mainly just getting the normal feelings that I’m sure most of you got before dropping this much on a transmission haha any thoughts?

Depending on where you at in Cali, you could roadtrip it up north and visit with Dynamic and Jon will shoot straight with you on what you need.

Don’t rule out Randy Reyes for a trans, he builds a stout 48re and backs his trans up. If it was me I’d go all the way with the trans build. Better to do it once.

I’m in Auburn, just above Sacramento and before Tahoe. I haven’t heard of Dynamic to be honest.

I’ve seen him on Instagram quite a bit. I guess if I’m spending this kind of money I have a tendency to lean towards the bigger companies who have been around a while, but I do realize there are most definitely great builders out there who aren’t big in the industry yet.

There’s also a place about 3-4 hrs from me that builds 48’s with all Goerend parts, they are called Browns Diesel. I know Goerend parts are top notch, but, I’m hung up on the amount being spent still, and worry about a smaller place like that.

There are many many good builders in the world. And about 100x as many horrible ones.

Dynamic
Randy's
Power driven
Firepunk
Goerend approved builders
DTT
Muldoon

Just to name few..

700hp and full billet is pretty overkill. However the issue of the output shaft on boosted launches is a problem. But it should handle a lot of abuse.

Big companies usually have the worst customer service and there builds usually fall short of good quality. Some of the best builders are “smaller” companies.

If you’re looking for locals, left coast diesel in Livermore is very reputable. Also diesel performance specialties in rocklin.

It does feel a little overkill, I just don’t want to go almost all the way and then be sittin there with a broken shaft after I spend 6k on a trans that “should” hold 800hp. All the companies you mentioned have a trans with billet IN/OUT shafts but stock intermediate, and that’s what most shops I’ve talked to said to do. Then there’s the options for bolt-in sprag and a billet drum....one shop said leave the intermediate shaft and do the billet drum and bolt in sprag

DPS in Rocklin will install a trans, but they won’t build one. They have an awesome C10 Cummins swapped truck if you’ve ever been by that place. Single cab long bed, lifted and 4x4, very nice truck

I’ve been told local has its upsides because if something goes wrong, a company from a different state all together may not take good care of you. Browns Diesel in Fresno is on Dave Goerend’s list though and uses his stuff.

I wouldn't overlook torque capabilities (or desires). Sorry, forgot to ask....Target (or desired) horsepower....is that at the crank or at the wheels?

Fleece is claiming 650 to the wheels, and the other turbo I’m looking at is Calibrated Power stealth 64 and he made 722 to the wheels, so I’d say somewheres in the middle of those

I was wondering if that would come up. Haha

I was just too lazy to change it.

I wouldn't buy a suncoast trans. They don't specialize in torqueflites. They are just a better ATS the way I see it. Not to say their product isnt any good..

Muldoon, firepunk and dynamic all had a specific focus and specialty in torquelfites. As did and do others but those are just a few that really stand out.

What are they claiming at the crank? It's gotta be higher at the crank than 650 - 722 to the wheels. 900ish at the crank; ~30% driveline losses? And at what RPM?

That article is from 2011. All that is generally irrelevant at this point. I dont even think they welded the planetaries at that time..

So many things have changed since then it's not even funny.

Yeah , innovations have def been made since that . Now they weld this , machine that and bigger bearings and other stuff i do not understand ...
John Mulldoon is always machining go fast stuff on the lathe , catch him on IG.

I love watching his IG. Seeing all those freshly machined pump faces. He does like 20 of them at a time!

Love that guy. Super hard worker.

I’m not sure what the crank HP is, just saw what’s advertised on Fleece website, and then saw a partial dyno graph from the Stealth 64
