Hi,
All my life, ive always driven manual car.
And now, i want to buy my first pick-up truck ever.
When a start to look on the diesel side (I dont want a gasoline truck), everyone told me to bought a automatic one?
Personally, i prefer to have more control on the motor with a manual transmition.

When i say everyone, its everyone.
What you guys think about that?

i have a auto trans with 90,000 hard mile s on it with no problems.

but if i could take it back , id get the 6 speed manual. like you said alot more control. and will give you the better MPG's

yeah i would go with a manual, a lot better control over the engine. I have an automatic and wish i tooken the time to buy and manual but i still think my truck is badA$$.

In the long run the stick will hold up better.I have a auto and I drove my buddys with a stick its got alot more "get up and go" then my auto

Ill throw this out there since i have an 06 with a 6-Speed. I agree with you guys about having control of the engine. Its really great. I love being in a gear, mashing the pedal and it moves, Fast. No hesitasion, no down shifting. It just goes. Launching is a little tricky. With my setup, launching in 2nd is still too low and 3rd just breaks em loose and roasts em.

As for daily driving it can be a pain in the butt. Normal driving, you have to shift fast to keep the RPMs down under 2k to try to get good mileage. LOL. In turn means you start in 2nd and your in 5th even 6th as you hit 45mph. On the highway with stock tires, youll be burning about 22-2300 RPMs at 70MPH. When i installed my 35's my RPMs dropped to 2000 at 70 but didnt see any mileage improvements.
As for mileage im going to have to disagree with the 6-speed getting better mileage. When i baby this thing, shift under 2k in town and drive at 65 on the highway, i have NEVER seen better than 15 MPG. Even the tanks where i drove nothing but highway at 65 with the wind to my back, i almost got 16MPG. When i drive it aggressivly the worst ive seen is about 13.5. Ive read of a few others with the G56 that have gotten about 18MPG but never hear of anything better. I hear about the Autos constantly getting over 20MPG. The RPMs just stay up to high with the low overdrive these trannys have.
The one good thing i will say about having a standard is all i have had to do was buy a $1800 clutch that will now hold up to 650HP. But the mileage and daily drivablity sucks.

Im actually to the point of looking for a full race Auto tranny with a stand alone controller.

Just my 2 cent. Ive had my truck for over 2 years now.

i have a 6 speed and i love it but have to agree with JWH with the shifting at 2k thing... your banging out gears like you have an 18 wheeler... thats one negitive other then that i love mine... you have the control... i get around 19-20 with my truck the way it is and im impressed i do alot of city driving and such so... just my 2 cents..

I really like the manual, to me a diesel pickup with a auto isn't right... just doesn't seem like its HD enough... Plus the added gears when towing are GREAT...

Around town you a lot, but get used to it... no biggie.

Haha on 2K shifting, I shift at 1400-1500 most times, thats 6th at 35mph.

i get around 19-20 with my truck the way it is and im impressed i do alot of city driving and such so.....

Damn, i wish i could get that. Is that hand calced? My overhead shows 19+ but it always seems to be about 4mpg to high. Maybe i need to go down in tire size. Oh and take my Smarty TNT off #9...lol. I need something adjustable on the fly. Seems every time i have the smarty down some chevy or ford wants to race but when its on, noone wants too. Go figure..lol.

I have had both, so i will also throw in my .02

both trucks were relatively the same so i think i had a good comparison. one was a 03 QC 4x4 6sp, other an 07 QC 4x4 auto.

i personally liked the 6sp more. it was more fun, and you felt more like a big rig. plus i have seen them put through some hell and they are still knocking it out. i got 18 mpg in town, that was with the quick shifting. and i got 20+ on the highway.

i traded it out and got an auto because i live in houston now, and well my left leg was more muscular than my right. i felt like i was shifting non-stop. so i liked the 6sp truck so much, i traded it out for the same but an auto.

i still miss my 6 sp. and would rather have it back. but lessons learned the hard way.

I would got for the 6 sp. IMO they are more fun, and i think more durable from the fact.

my vote is for the handshaker.
if i keep my foot out of it i'll see 18 - 20 mpg
city / hwy. having to shift IS a bit of an
issue, but i love it, wouldnt trade it for nuthin.

The new six speed autos are very responsive. There's an up-down rocker switch on the column shifter that lets you upshift and downshift, and the shifts are prompt and snappy. My dad has a stock 6.7 auto that chirps the tires at low speeds and when slowing down. Strikes me as a great tranny.

And, if you're ever racing... No contest that the auto's better.

When I ordered my truck I asked for both and for some reason they couldnt do it :lol3: there are days I wish I had the 6speed and days im glad I have the auto.... I really appreciated the auto after having knee surgery on the left knee... dont know what I woulda done if I had the 6spd.... but when I am pulling a trailer I wish i had the 6spd... so i think its a great choice either way you go!

Buy what YOU want... not what "everyone else" is telling you to buy. I really like my 6-sp manual. But then... the only automatics I've ever owned have been Wife's minivans. My truck will get 21 MPG highway... IF I obey posted speed limits which in Oregon are 65 MPH on the Interstates & 55 on all other highways. I do have a certain amount of difficulty doing this...

OK, you guys suck. LOL. I really need to do something about my mileage. Wish i could get at least 17 or 18 on the highway.
I will tell ya this if i ever got rid of my 6-speed i would really miss is. It can be a bear to drive in town sometimes, especially with the heavy pedal of the Dual Disk but when its time to play all those problems go away for a while. Its definatly fun and sounds BA with the 5" straight pipe shifting through the gears. I get lots of looks from people seeing whats coming down the road or cruising down the beach and its easier to roll coal with the 6er since you can pick your gear and lug the engine.
I had a guy in a Duramax pull up next to me tell me how BA my truck sounded shifting through the gears. I love the truck, just hate the mileage im getting.
