Raising the redline? Shifting an automatic?

So I was driving on the highway in a hurry and angry.
I needed to pass some idiot who wouldn't get outta the left lane.

I tapped the OD off button so that I could fly around him up hill... Since I was already doing 80, the transmission didn't shift. Shifting out of Overdrive would have put the engine well past redline.

Questions:
Will shifting the automatic manually damage anything?
Is there any way to raise the redline so that I can safely shift out of overdrive at high speeds for more acceleration?

Your truck doesn't make power than high in the rpm range. Od should have pulled fine. Kepp in mind these trucks make peak torque at ~2000-2200 rpm.

Just cause you can rev that high doesn't mean you make any power up there.

As for runnving the egine that highs safely you need valve springs and other valve train moda.

I need to improve my 70-110 times.

On my bike with a 11000 RPM redline and in my car with a 8500 RPM redline, there's lots more power up high.
I figured there might be more power up high in the Diesel as well.
Not without modification to the vavle train and a way to fuel up high. The vp really isn't good about fueling strong past 3500 rpm.

If you have 4.10's you couls swap them for 3.55's

Quite opposite actually.

Why were you needing to fly past someone if you were already doing 80? Just curious.
That sport bike probably has a piston stroke of maybe 2-2.5 inches with a 2.75 bore and tiny aluminum pistons. the rotating weight is minimal and the short stroke allows for high rpm use. Thats why it doesn't make any power at 1100 rpm. The Cummins has a 4 inch stroke and the crank weighs maybe 150lbs, which is why it makes power at 1500-2500 rpm.

You can modify a Cummins to turn 5k, but thats for the most hardcore sled pulling use, where engine life is quoted in number of 300 ft pulls, not hundreds of thousands of miles. If you want to turn 5k, you'll need a filled block, custom cam, crank, rods, pistons, head, injectors, a modified p-pump, head studs, turbo... you get the idea.

Or, as I said in the Cannonball Run thread, add gearing/ tires, then add just enough power to compensate so that your truck will run at 100 the way it does 70 now.

Breathing mods, mild injectors, a good programmer, baseline fuel system upgrades, upgraded coolers for all fluids, aftermarket extra overdrive unit, good wheels and TIRES RATED FOR THE SPEEDS YOU WANT TO RUN, and you should be well on your way.

Because I had to be somewhere in a hurry and some idiot couldn't read the signs that say, "Slower Traffic Keep Right."
If I didn't have to bring my tools and a stack of plywood along, I would've taken my car.
80 is pretty slow.
You just need an Edge Comp set to 5x5. At highway speeds, passing isn't an issue, even without downshifting. Add some injectors to that... and I can only imagine.

A (new) Audi A4 tried to pass me on the right a couple weeks ago on the interstate. He figured the big white truck was holding things up. He was forced to get behind me, I simply out-pulled him.

My truck is stock, power wise, other than the Edge Comp and having the pump tapped.
Oh... and nothing wrong with shifting an auto manually. No damage done. Though it sounds like it wont' allow you to have OD after a certain RPM or speed - probably smart on the computers part. I manually shift mine a lot. And have every vehicle i've owned, never had a transmission failure.
Cool...Though more power means I'm going to need to build my transmission.

I've already taken care of the brakes (3rd gen front and rear) and my tires are "R" speed rated, so they'll take 106 MPH sustained.

Speed never hurt anyone. It's suddenly becoming stationary that's the killer.

I drive 25 MPH on residential roads.
I drove 35-45 on the major roads that have businesses and stuff on them.
This makes sense because people will be around.

Completely straight highway? High speed.

They do it all the time in Germany.
What's the difference between Germany and here? Similar asphalt. Similar cars. Similar weather.
You're driving a 12 year old 8000# truck. In Germany there are reduced speed limits for trucks and vehicles that don't need to be driving that fast.

Have you ever taken your truck to 90 mph and seen how far it takes you to actually stop it?

Honestly you couldn't pay me to drive above 75 in my truck. Compared to the cars of today it just doesn't stop or handle at those speeds. I would be SOL if the person in front me decided to slam on his/her brakes, or if a deer or something jumped in front. trying to swerve would just make everything worse.

My truck RARELY sees more than 72ish I did 85 on US 10 for a mile or so. I don't like going that fast in my truck. Now the number of times that I've taken my liter bike out and not hit 100+ I can count on 1 hand, but its built for that, even then it takes a lot to slow a sportbike down from those speeds.
That's all up to you though. Oh and the Germany argument is invalid, they only allow certain types of vehicles to do those speeds and 3/4 or 1 ton dodge trucks aren't among those.
I wasn't even aware my big heavy truck would go past 70 :O

:agree2: yea i love stomping on it at stop lights and feeling the power. but never really felt like pushing my truck to high speeds. ive got a bike for that
personally I only get on it hard for VERY SHORT bursts on wide open highway with NOBODY as far as the eye can see . Other than that follow the speed limits and traffic flow. I am not agressive driver at all in traffic stream. Never a speeding ticket in over ten years. Never actually raced anybody dont really care to. My truck looks like grandpas truck so most hot shots dont pay muck attention and thats fine by me. And truck is meticulously maintained for safety ie brakes, tires and steering.
