Im looking to buy a stock 3rd gen 6.7 as a work truck, i have a 2013 right now.

What are the differences between the two ? And how is reliability compared to a newer truck? Is there anything in particular i should be looking for when buying a used 6.7?

Thanks

The 'older' 2007's run best without the emissions system IMO. I ran mine stock for 48K with no issues but it has never been a DD. Most of the issues with the units from what I have read in this forum have been emissions related probably because they were 'grocery getters' and weren't worked enough. I understand that they have 'cleaned-up the emissions issue pretty much on the newer trucks. My truck became much better after I deleted and my fuel 'economy' went up 2-3 MPG's. (15-17) mostly highway driving 2100 rpm's-78MPH. If you can find a stock truck, if you haven't already found one, reliability will depend on the use and your pedal foot. I am at only at 68K now, and all is well. Good Luck!

I have a 2008 3500, bought 0 miles, really no problems until 38k when the dpf went bad and instead of repairing, deleted the whole truck. Let me tell you, biggest difference maker. Pretty reliable on my end, oil change every 6 months or 6k miles and fuel filter every 10-12k miles and it will last you a life time. I help my uncle once in a while dumping debris and he has a 2007.5 3500 deleted and tuned. On big jobs, we tow a triple axle dump trailer, weighed-in on the dumpster scale at 47,000lbs once lol .As far as what to look for, basically same as any other diesel truck, and asking questions. Transmission is not the greatest, so you might wanna know what it was used for.

I looked at a really nice completely stock 08 today with 21k miles, looked brand new. Ended up driving it and i have to say it felt and drove completely different then my 2013, not in a bad way but it just felt more like a "truck" if that makes any sense? Kind of what i want though just a nice, rugged, simple truck without all the leather and nav junk. Only problem is they wanted $35k for it, wasn't happening so i offered 25k and they told me to leave. I cant see paying that much for a used pickup, going to start looking at a few higher milage trucks.

It can be done by disconnecting the EGR or getting an EGR DELETE Kit and using SIMS, but you will have a CEL. There are a couple of guys that subscribe here that have been using the SIMS for quite awhile and don't mind the CEL. If running 'code free' is what you want, you will need a Tuner. My personal preference is EFI LIVE. Disconnecting the EGR works on 07-09 trucks. On the others, I believe you will be thrown into limp mode. There is tons of info on deleting right here in this forum. Good Luck! P.S. that really is a high price for that truck you just looked at. It is close to what you can buy a brand new one. IMO, it might be worth 26K or so compared to what they are selling for here in Texas, but again you don't want to spend that kind of money. Keep looking, you WILL find what you want!

Yea, there was no way i was spending that much on a 7 year old truck. EFI live is what i used to run on my cummins and i loved it. I will be looking around for some tuners i guess, because at first i was thinking buy a stock truck and just remove emissions, but after driving one of these things i think a little more power is almost needed.
