I’ve owned my 2018 Mega Limited for about 2 months and I’ve only put DEF in it from the pump at a local Sunoco station that is a mini truck stop.

I’ve noticed it’s a real pain to fill the DEF with a truck stop pump. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it just pumping too fast because it’s made to fill big trucks? Or is there a problem with my truck? When I found out this local station had a DEF fill I thought oh great how handy. Well... not so much

Note: my previous 2018 Mega I only filled with jugs and it was totally fine. I’ve never tried it on my new one yet.

Yup, you have to run the pumps about as slow as they'll go or it will back up and run down the side of your truck.

And, there are still some pumps that use the magnetic release nozzle, those require a special magnetic collar that slips over the nozzle to release it to flow.

I almost always fill at the pumps, and I learned a long time ago to go slow. I mean, you're only pumping about 5.5 gallons max, so it doesn't take that long.

Actually I have been able to fill mine nearly full force but I have to twist the pump handle to around the 8:00 position and hold it there.

All the fluid going in has to displace the air in there. When the def nozzle is as large as the fill pipe for the def tank the air has nowhere to go so the tank is slightly pressurized. This causes blow backs and a urea shower. Perfect cologne for the office party.

Fill up at truck stops everyday and can confirm, just go slow.

Not quite as large as the tube, you just can't shove it all the way in like you do the fuel nozzle.

You are correct.......except for I can pump in 8.5 to 8.9 gallons of DEF in my 4500 Cab & Chassis really fast. Those tanks are actually vented up near the filler neck.

I fill all my DEF at the pump, the first latch on the handle is just barely too much and shuts off after a few seconds.

Depending on the style of the nozzle, I have found my fuel cap and or a folded up business card work great. Gas cap goes under the handle, OR folded card goes under the ratchet part of the setup. Gotta keep an eye on it as it wont turn off, but I only pump a few gallons at a time.

You would think that by now the industry would have created nozzles that actually fit correctly and work in our trucks/cars as well as put them in where the regular pumps are. I have only tried twice in the time I've owned my truck (5yrs) to buy DEF at the pump. Both times were a total fiasco. Between being so busy with big rigs, not being able to pay at the pump, fighting with the pump to actually pump DEF into the truck and not all down the side of my truck while clicking off every 2 seconds (while squeezing the handle nowhere close to the first notch).

For the small amount of DEF that my truck uses, I'll just buy mine in the jugs. The extra $6 it costs me to fill up using jugs as compared to buying at the pump is nowhere worth the hassle, frustration or mess.

Then there is the fact that there isn't a station in 50 mile radius of my house that sells DEF at the pump.

I am in the opposite boat, I have a station 10 minutes away, I can pay at the pump and I have no trouble pumping DEF without splashing or spilling. To me the filling with external jugs is the nightmare.
