Price opinion on 06 5.9 6 speed SB

I was just wondering what y’all’s opinion were on this truck. It is a one owner 2006 2500 6 speed short bed 2wd with 130k miles. The truck is listed for 23,900 and was just trying to get opinions on whether or not it’s a decent deal and what kind of repairs I can expect in the next year or two. Truck will be a daily driver. Will post pics below. Thanks!

Pappy, i paid 14,500 for my 2006 4x4 5.9 with 215,000, a lift, new tires and brakes... in november. Its clean. The drivers seat needs love(its not torn just sat in) but i just found replacement parts so that'll be fixed come spring... there are better deals...

Which is why I will regearing my 2006 3:73 to 3:43. It is not great on the freeway.

My 3.73s with my 1st gen g56 is fine but I always have weight and a very heavy toyhauler. What they really need is a 7th gear and then everyone can have nice low gearing and make any of them more versatile.

Have an 01 bought new with 237k ext cab,2wd.,6th. speed am considering selling. Don't have a clue what it's worth. Located in Willow Park TX., 20 mile west of Foat Wurth. Been pulling a 14k 5th. wheel around the country. Will turn 86 Monday and my boys said hang it up. I told them that Willie...... (Nelson)..... just started another tour and he just turned 90. To bad that Waylon and the boys wont be with him.

I had a two wheel drive for a while. Nice ride but it really would get stuck in wet grass.

Which is why I will regearing my 2006 3:73 to 3:43. It is not great on the freeway.

3:42 gears are really lame even if you are on the small stock tires.
Swapping in a good used, 2007.5+ G56 trans with the better OD gears is much easier and cheaper.
If you tow regularly, backing up a trailer with a 2wd truck with 3:42 gears would be zero fun.

You could pick up a good used 2007.5+ G56 trans and then sell your older G56 trans and that would only cost you the difference.
And swapping transmissions is way easier than re-gearing both front and rear differentials.

When I bought a used g56 to install in my 95 4x4 I had no idea of the 2 different overdrive ratios . I had it rebuilt in Forth Worth before I installed it . The automatic which I hated from day one had a .69 overdrive . At any rate I found out about the shorter overdrive. I installed 285/75/17 nitto tires on the truck which helped . It's works OK now and I think if I was towing a heavy trailer it might be better with that ratio . This is with 3.55 or 54 gearing . I read a article where a fellow used a Ford 6 speed and it has a higher overdrive ratio. I have no idea on how reliable they ..My truck gets decent mileage depending on how I drive it. I don't miss the automatic. Backing a trailer I use low in transfer case ...I have a bm short shifter on the g56 ..
In 2015, in the SFBA, I bought a very clean, 2007, long bed in this color (!) with a nice, slightly elevated ARE camper shell (a large-size bicycle with extended seat fits upright inside), Cummins 5.9, G56 6-speed, stock-size tires with nice alloy rims for $24K. I did have to vacuum/clean the interior and bed for many many hours, plus new batteries and really cleaned the K&N air filter, and change all the fluids (the latter to be safe), but the truck's been stone cold reliable since. I also built a roof rack that mounts to the rails on the top of the camper shell. Made it from wood for cheap and only put it on when I need to carry 20 ft lumber or piping.

I was interested to see in one of the comments that the 6th gear has been noted as a bit short, which I've noticed. Given the torque, I'd like to see rpm around 2000 at 70 mph, and not 2300 (or so... I forget exactly). But it's only relevant for fuel mileage. I get a smidge under 20 mpg at 65-70. 80 mph feels too fast engine rpm-wise, so 75 is max cruising. Interesting to know they apparently made 6th a bit taller later on, but surely too much bother to upgrade. I bought the truck for its carrying capacity and not something to fuss over.

I suspect the truck really needs a 7th gear.

I'm all on road so have not have any instance where I wished for 4X. Maybe if I skied, 4X with chains would be incrementally useful.

Ordered the 01 2500 ext. cab in March 00. Was told it will be made in St. Louis or Mexico. Told the dealership if I had a choice make it in Mexico. Was told I don't have a choice. Was made in St. Louis; came in in May of 00. Cummins had "upgraded" the engine to a HO- 245 HP. for 01. The 6th. speed ,I believe, had been out for maybe 2 years. When it first came out there was a shifting problem either between 2nd. & 3rd. or 3rd. and 4th. The problem was fixed when I got mine. Very smooth between all gears,if one shifts into the right gear. Mileage, unloaded, average 21mpg., loaded with 14k average 11mpg down here in the flat lands at speeds of 671/2 mph. Stupid speedodomter is graduated in 21/2 increments. From Loveland to Cheyenne averaging 25mpg unloaded. Must have been the altitude.

Have replaced alternator, starter,"slave" brake, relined brakes, fuel lines, injector pump. Engine has not been into. Burns no oil. Have used Rotella 15w 40 from the beginning.

Caution; if you think there is a fuel line leak be very careful,fuel pressure into the cylinders is 17,400 psi from the injector pump.. Can't be seen. Will penetrate the skin and if it hits you in the face that would be Bad news. Use a piece of cardboard to check around fuel lines.

The Problem; had the truck about 3 months, working a contract job in Southeast Tx. Was driving to work and the truck stopped. Towed to dealership. Lift pump. Was on the 4th. lift pump, counting the original, the first 3 years. Called Cummins and ask them why. They were "shocked" said it was the first time they heard of such a thing. Phunney thing, in 03 or 04 the fuel pump was in the fuel tank. Am on my 5th. lift pump at present, it's a Bosch, must be a good one. Check pressures fore and aft quite often.

Move that lift pump off the engine and back by the tank. No more dead lift pumps. Or do the swap and install the conversion module to put it in the tank. Your injector pump and wallet will thank you. Moved mine years ago before I lost an injector pump, and ran 1/2" lines to the filter, and from the filter to the injector pump. Still on the original injector pump on my 01 6 Speed, 238K miles.
Going to let the next owner do that. Also going to sell or trade the 5th. wheel. Can't lift to install the hitch anymore.

Anyway, the current lift pump has been on it for quite a few years. Don't let the fuel tank get below 1/4. Finally found out that when the fuel tank gets very low on diesel the pump gets hot and eventually burns out.
Dang man there’s not a 07 dodge in the country with a cloth seat that nice still. Sucks it’s 2wd tho. Really hurts resale. I use 4x4 basically everyday for the past 10yrs lol

"Slave brake"??? Should have been slave clutch, which takes two people and about $200 at O'REILLEYS.
