Back fired, a funny term for a fuel injected diesel engine. So was this "backfire" after hammering down with a sudden release of the throttle?

What you heard, if I interpret your response correctly , is usually referred to as turbo bark on these pages. You can read up on it, but it is something that can destroy your turbo. In the gas turbine engine world it is known by it's corrret name, compressor stall.
