check the fuel drain valve. had to replace that on mine. the intank screen could be plugged in the tank or a bad float in the tank. possibly a bad fuel pump. when was the filter last changed?

alright go to the front of the truck and look in the center of the grill and your gonna see and oval with the letters F-O-R-D in the center. theres your problem!....

But really, does it have a water separator with a drain plug like the cummins? because that could be a little loose or maybe a leaky line

I got a really sweet deal on a ford once, but that poor 7.3 could not even break 50 with 6000 pounds behind it. It even had 4.10s and a 5 speed. from my experience, if that valve is bad it will usually cause hard starting when it sits for awhile( oh wait its a ford, you wouldnt notice). If they leak it allows a vent on the system and the fuel will empty back into the tank. Does it always sputter or just for a few minutes when cold?

It might have a cracked fuel filter cap. They are notorious for cracking. Or the o ring on the drain valve is another thing bad about leaking.

Id ask this question on a Ford forum for an educated answer. But if your leaking fuel before the bowl that needs to be addressed. Sound like a fuel bowl o ring, easy fix.

You see the drip by the trans because the valley between the heads has a 3/4 to 1inch hole in the back passenger side of the block. What ever is leaking is running to that hole down the back of the engine and out the inspection cover of the trans. If it was the filter drain and the drain hose is hooked up it would be dripping by the passenger side front of the engine. They had problems with filter caps leaking because of bad o-rings or cracks. They also have problems with the seals inside the steel tubes where they attach to the filter houseing and heads (there is a rubber seal inside those nuts that looks like a piece of vaccume hose.) Hope this helps.
