Every once and awhile the tranny temp gets real hot the the truck doesn't want to shift properly. IE won't shift from 2nd to 3rd and when I go to brake it down shifts very hard. Any ideas?

going through something similar right now on my truck. Mine however will hesitate from 1 to 2 as well. My trans builder believes it is a malfunctioning governor pressure solenoid. I should be putting it in later this week or early next.

yes, check your governor pressure, i think it should be in the 90 pound range in gear at 1500 rpm, you can also check the band tension on the 1st-2nd gear band, tight bands can cause excessive heat and hard shifting. also, if you have low governor pressure your truck wont shift out of first without revving the motor, i've rebuilt a couple 47RE's, they are a simple tranny
