Early 2004 model c code 5.9 undergoing a full rebuild. Ran into something not covered in my book.
I have the J style cooling jets installed in the block, and in 5 of the main bearing saddles there are small blue plastic plugs. The plug from the number 4 main is missing. One reference I found on here stated these are plugs that are used when the J hook style jets are used. The Cummins parts manual shows both j style cooling jets and saddle cooling jets part number "4890024 Nozzle, Piston Cooling" but no part number supplied for the little blue plugs...
Anyone have more info on these plugs / jets

It's the 8th digit of your VIN. C is the HO version.
And of course you really gotta watch out for the 2004's since the engine model year was split. The majority were considered late 2004 but a there's a few considered early model 2004s. Not 100% sure what all the differences are but it comes up a lot when ordering parts.

I was also told the turbo was 341 on the 04 and 351 on the 04.5 and the piston bowls, injector angle, hole count are also different from what my local diesel shop told me (i like to hang around there and learn stuff)

No, it is by build date for the break. Jan 04 and newere ar the 325 HO. Before that you need to know if its HO or SO, at least for the cooling jets. They used the same ros and cranks so they had both styles. An HO had j-jets for the gallery cooled pistons where the SO still used the saddle coolers.
