Has anyone seen coolant pissing from the lower passenger corner of their head. there seems to be a small plug or ball cant see very well from under the truck but looks like a steady stream of coolant from that small plug about the size of a pea

I can say much about the freeze plug or the leak.

But I can tell you that your leak is caused from old coolant that turn corrosive from not being flushed every 30K miles so if this freeze plug is rotten then the rest are going to be right behind it. Sad to say.

Most antifreeze I've ever been around is good for atleast 100k. But you say Mike to dump it every 30k?
Why? I know that's very good maintenance but that's a little extreme. Shoot that's once a year for some people. I know coolant goes bad. But not in 30k!!!

I think if your racking up miles real fast it will last longer. If the plugs corroded though he's probably right. I typically go 2, maybe 3 years max if I'm being lazy on coolant flushes. I only do 6-8k miles max on one of my vehicles per year though.

There's a test you can do with a digital multimeter to tell if the coolant has gone to hell. Try this if you have a multimeter and see where you're at.

Your also from the Chicago area I see. The 2" of salt they dump for every inch of snow may have had some kind of role in this as well.

I do 35k a year. I test my coolant every six months it had never been bad but I still change it yes the salt has played a factor I need a fix machine shop or new head its not the normal plug its like a little ball bearing cast into the head lower rear corner passenger side

I don't listen to the claims of 100K coolants.

I seen so many good vehicle turned into junk because the owner states, "Oh the coolant is still green it must be still good!" This is so wrong. As coolant ages over time it drifts from pH of 7 to lower (acidic) or higher (basic) and becomes corrosive. By the time you see the rusty color its way too late. The damage is already done. The factory service manual even states the 30k miles (36 month) coolant flushes.

This is why I can proudly display the inside of my radiator and block and its still factory fresh inside. Even crazier yet I don't not use distilled water either its all tap water. No blooms, no lime scale, no problems...

9 years and 185k miles. Perfect cooling system. :party018:

Here is what old coolant will do to thermostat housing...

Measure voltage by putting volt meter into radiator coolant and grounding the other side. .3 volts is too much. I like Zerex G05 from NAPA. Other stores here don't carry it. Still available full strength.

I understand that Mike. BUT that's with Mopar coolant. I'm not sure what brand they use either. I doubt that its Prestone. Probably some cheapa$$ anti-freeze. That's why they say 30k miles. Not to bring big trucks into this either but I've seen/drove some big trucks that have 800k on the original coolant. Those don't seem to have any issues. So, why do you dump good coolant? Waste of $$$$. I know coolant is cheap and cheaper then any repair bill by far. IMHO.

The same reason we dump good engine oil way too early because its cheaper than a repair bill.

But remember on big truck they have coolant filter and coolant condition in the filter so coolant change are not required.

now that we have discussed coolant and not touched on the problem does anyone have anything to say about fixing the problem.
There isn't a cure for voltage in the coolant. Its caused by the electrical system. Maybe a few grounding straps to the engine block to frame. I know they already have this. Same for radiator. IDK. Maybe a ground from the coolant to frame. Impossible maybe. Or just keep throwing cash at unnecessary coolant changes at 30k miles.

not sure where you are seeing the antifreeze but mine was leaking around the water pump but took awhile to figure that out cuz it looked like it was comeing from lower on the block but it was actually coming from the water pump gasket and running down the block. Just a thought.

Mine is leaking from a small passage on the back of the head were a small ball was pressed into the head

Your going have to pull the head off to fix that properly. I know what your talking about. That coolant passage hole is made from casting the head. Then they press the ball in to seal it. Maybe clean area well with a acid base to remove paint/oil then mix some JB weld. Let it dry then refill the coolant. Can you get to the area easily?

I ordered head studs and head gasket set today all be here on wednesday. i cant get to it in the truck its the very back corner. i'm thinking i'll drill the balls out of all of them tap them and put small pipe plugs in. while i have the head out i'm going to send i out and have a valve job done a plain the head. might as well stud it while its out to.
