Parking brake went pop!

1841 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Compression Ignition
Hey fellas, looking for some direction on where to start. My parkng brake made a pop noise and went to the floor and won't come back on its own. My brake doesn't seem to be stuck in the engaged position but the pedal has no tension. If you pull the release the pedal drops to the floor on its own. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your cable snapped somewhere. Take a look at the cable under the drivers side by the frame and see if anything looks broken or loose. Make sure it is still hooked up to the pedal and they are not broken back at the rear hubs. Once you find where it broke, then the repair can begin.
Thanks man, I looked when it happened and nothing was visible. Just looked again and I think the front cable has broke somewhere but can't find it yet. I'm not at home so I don't want to pull it all the way out until I can remove it all. Funny thing is I just bought the rear cable because I was at the end of the road for adjusting it so I guess ill go get the front one now. Anything I need to know for changing the cables out?

Sorry, can't help you there. I would suggest getting the new cable before pulling the old one out. You might need it for a pull string. I don't know, but the new cable might offer some clues as to how to do it. Hopefully someone that has had to replace theirs will chime in.
If you don't see any issues under the truck, then you need to look under the dash.
It ended up being the rear cable that was broke right at the wheel. Changed out both front and rear just to avoid further issues. However ... I noticed the adjuster underneath the driver's side was as tight as it could and actually removed it and put it in a vice just to get it undone. Cleaned it, lubed it up, put it back in with the new cables but ended up having to tightened it almost all the way to the end. Do I need to replace the other cables also. There is a short one underneath door and one that crosses over to the opposite wheel?

You need to adjust the parking brake inside the rear drum. They adjust like regular drum brakes. It is possible the park shoes are worn out.

Adjusting procedure.
Raise one or both rear wheels. Loosen the cable adjuster till about 1/2 inch of end. Find the cover for adjuster buried on top of axle in a hole and remove rubber plug. Take a 6 inch nail and bend a lazy "L" about two inches from pointed end. Grind pointed end till looks like a "-" screwdriver bit. Clamp the head of nail with strong vise grips.
Insert the bit into adjuster opening and find the adjuster wheel. Push the adjuster wheel up to tighten shoe until shoe drags when turning wheel. Back off if brake binds up. Once you get both park brakes adjusted to drag lightly you can tighter the cable adjuster so you have 5-6 ratchet clicks on park brake pedal. You will be amazed how well the park brake holds when done properly.

Great information Dozer. Thanks. Mine don't need it yet, but now I know what to do when they do need adjusting.
