Hey guys, I'm south of Pittsburgh, and I don't have my Cummins yet, but I'm in the process of selling my jeep to get a Cummins. I was curious about inspections for diesels. I live in Allegheny county, so if anybody from here could chime in about what is required for inspection. How far can the tires stick out of the wheel wells? Do diesels require an emissions inspection (stupid Allegheny county)?

Tire are not allowednto stick out past the body line. No emissions is needed on a diesel. Most people get away with a straight pipe exhaust some inspection stations won't allow it. Stacks must have a heat shield if it can be reached from out side of the bed (no body ever inforces it ). And make sure you have a tight front end that's the first thing they look for cause its most common

Yeah ed is right nothing out past the fenders and nothing bigger than a 4in flare unless its factory. ALso they are enforcing it more in washington in the south franklin area. I got a warning from them before. The muffler also depends on the person cause some people are sticklers on that. Bring that bad boy down to Hill International Trucks and ill inspect it

I had a feeling about the tires. I really wasn't sure about the emissions though. I had heard there's no emissions for diesels, but I just wanted to be sure.

Being an inspector, you probably know others. How strict is the nothing out past the fenders? Do most people let like 1/2" or 3/4" go, or are they super strict? If I live in Allegheny Co, I don't think I can get it inspected in Washington, can I? Thanks for the offer though!

Tires arent too strict but twp cops watch that stuff more. I assume you live bridgeville area if you south? Id say 3/4 to 1in would be about max. You can get it inspected in any county you want man that makes no differance.

Your allowed 3 inch fender flares and your tires have to be inside those 3 inch fender flares. If you have stacks inside your bed you dont need heat shields only if outside of body like big rigs. So if you get a flat bed and put stacks at front of bed against body of truck you need heat shields for inspections

You do need heat sheilds. Ask south franklin cops to not give you a ticket for that cause they do everytime now

Inside your truck bed some one has to reach over your bed side. Aka reaching into your property. In the inspection book it does not say you need heat shields unless its outside the body line. And inside your truck bed is not outside body line. So technically they cant ticket you. I won in court twice now because cops think they know it all.

Yeah but i always tell people this. They do think they know it all but reguardless we all take risks doing things like this. Cops do whatever they want then we have to fight as in your instance to prove we are right. Annoying to say the least. That kinda falls into that gray area ya know

Elizabeth actually. On my jeep now, the tread surface sticks out about a half inch and I have had no problems.
