Fuel heater recall

Jut received the notification regarding this recall and as I was reading it said in bold letters " no parts are available at this time to make the repair". So what's the point of sending me this if you don't have parts. That's worse than work have 100k engines needing a certain part changed and only having enough parts to 10k of them. Way to go Cummins and Chrysler.

i think cuz legally ChryCo is required to notify owners that they plan to fix the issue for free at some point, and that the vehicle can catch fire or whatever...not necessarily that they have to actually fix it immediately...

we have about a half dozen recalls that are "no parts available" right now

here's the notice for anyone who ain't got it yet

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL P65 / NHTSA 14V-635
This interim notice applies to your vehicle (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
This interim notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Dear: (Name)
Chrysler has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2010 through 2014 model year RAM trucks and RAM Cab Chassis trucks equipped with a 6.7L Cummins Turbo diesel engine.
The problem is...
The diesel fuel heater electrical connector on your truck may overheat and cause a fuel leak. The diesel fuel heater housing at the fuel heater electrical connector may overheat, leading to the failure of the O-rings that seal the male electrical terminals in the diesel fuel filter/heater assembly. A leaking diesel fuel filter/heater could cause underhood smoke and/or an engine compartment fire.
What your dealer will do...
Chrysler intends to repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). However, the part required to provide a permanent remedy for this condition is currently not available. Chrysler is making every effort to provide the part as quickly as possible. Chrysler will contact you again by mail, with a follow-up recall notice, when the remedy part is available.
What you must do to ensure your safety...
Once you receive your follow-up notice in the mail, simply contact your Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealer right away to schedule a service appointment.
If you need help...
If you have questions or concerns which your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact the Chrysler Group Recall Assistance Center at 1-800-853-1403.
Please help us update our records by filling out the attached prepaid postcard if any of the conditions listed on the card apply to you or your vehicle. You may also update this information on the web at CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
If you have already experienced this condition and have paid to have it repaired, please send your original receipts and/or other adequate proof of payment to the following address for reimbursement: Chrysler Customer Assistance, P.O. Box 21-8007, Auburn Hills, MI 48321-8007, Attention: Reimbursement. Once we receive and verify the required documents, reimbursement will be sent to you within 60 days.
If your dealer fails or is unable to remedy this defect without charge and within a reasonable time, you may submit a written complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E., Washington, DC 20590, or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Ehh oh well. My filter is drained and unplugged but that's becides the point. I guess if enough trucks could potentially catch on fire I bet parts get made faster. To many legalities involved these days. Fix the problem and be done with it I say.

Thanks! Have there really been people that have had the engine compartment catch on fire because of this?

Also what ambient temp does the fuel heater activate? I'm in TX so I doubt mine comes on much. We had a few days in the 20's so far this winter. Mid 30's-40 is more of the normal low.

Never know it might be. I go home on Christmas eve and come back to work on the third so I might not be able to get it this go round. Its always something either they don't have the parts. Or I don't have the time. Honestly I'm not overly concerned yet. I know many of people that put a lot of mileage on the stock setup without any problems. But I always like new free parts. :rof

Just checked online mine has this recall also.

So now I need recalls N49 & P65.

Also on the Repair Description it says

THE DIESEL FUEL HEATER WIRE HARNESS ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR MUST BE REPLACED ON ALL VEHICLES.ALSO, THE DIESEL FUEL FILTER/HEATER HOUSING MUST BE INSPECTED FOR FUEL LEAKS. IF A FUEL LEAK IS FOUND, THE DIESEL FUEL FILTER/HEATER ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED

So I guess all the trucks will get it.

While I was at the local deal for my issues. I asked about this issue, the response was the recall notice so I had to read it. They did not have parts but the formal notices were sent out on december 1st according to them, the dealer did not know much more than we do currently other than a general explanation of effected parts. I have not yet received the recall notice for my 2010 but having them replace the harness anyway for free and a fuel filter while they are in there.

I would venture a guess, if the fuel filter housing is dry, you'd be ok. I found this post, & thought it would be useful. Courtesy of hollnagel.
