P245a-egr Cooler Bypass Control Circuit /open

anyone know what causes this code to apear?

I get this during the first warm up of the truck. After starting the truck once warm i don't get it anymore...

All i can figure is the cooler bypass valve cycles at some point during the trucks warm up and the thermocouple in the intake doesn't sense the EGR changing so the ECM gets mad at us...

I'm open to any suggestions other than- "you shouda bought a smarty or xrt"... haha

Update on edge

Edge has an update for you. They will send you a new monitor with an added option that will fix your problem. Worked for me.

MADS and H & S have also had issues (still do from time to time) and updates to fix the problems their programmers have. Unfortunately, the edge race, for dodge, isn't internet updateable, but I like it. All the programmers have issues from time to time. With that said, options are great and they all have pros and cons.

My truck suddenly started throwing the code a few weeks after the new edge unit was installed. The edge techs appear to be stumped on this one. I only have my EGR blocked; not the full cooler delete. Also, my butterfly is still operational on the intake side. I wish a fooler could be built for the EGR. Smarty and Black Maxx shut it off; I know!

Question: Would it be a bad idea to unblock the EGR during the winter and block it off again during the summer? I know the truck would warm up much faster and I always hear driving a diesel cold is tough on the engine.

Any more thoughts on this issue(s)? How about the code?

Same here- Edge customer service is GREAT! They sent me a COMPLETE new edge that was updated with the- clear codes on start up with delay feature. Which now allows me to start the truck code free(no more P0405). So this was great, but it did nothing to my P245a- same deal as in my earlier post in this thread.

Is this just something all of us with the Edge are living with, or does anyone have a fix, or anyone not seeing it (in winter conditions)?

Call edge

I had the exact same results. Make sure you call edge and tell them about the code. I've been talking to the edge guys for a couple weeks about the P245A code. They said they are working on a solution (we will see).

I sent the edge people a ton of info from the forum and told them other people are having the same problem. Please call them ASAP. If more people call regarding the same problem, the more likely edge will take the time to come up with a fix. Make sure you tell them that numerous other edge owners, on the forum you belong to, are having the exact same problem. Tell them many of the forum members are getting frustrated and questioning their decision to buy the edge product.

Make sure you mention the code pops up for people that simply block the EGR or delete the entire cooler.

I just ordered the RSD EGR delete kit from james. So I guess i am about to have the CEL light on my truck also because of this????

In really cold weather, probably. Call edge and tell them when you have the problem, so they come up with a fix (hell, tell them right when you install so it becomes more of a pressing issue for them). The more people reporting the problem, the more likey we are to see a fix. You will eventually get it, when it's cold.

I just called Edge and talked to Casey and told him. He says the Edge isnt designed to delete the EGR. By the way, what has cold weather got to do with it? Do you get a CEL light during the summer?

It isn't designed to delete the cooler, but it is designed to block the EGR. People are getting the code when they simply block the EGR (not the full delete). Edge customer service even recommends pulling the butterfly when blocking the EGR. Technically, if you reinstall the cooler and simply block the EGR, the edge should work fine but the P245A code still pops up on cold days. The info below explains why temp plays a role.

A forum member, RegenerationComplete, posted the following info about the P245A code (the part I placed in bold seems to explain the problem, which I sent to edge):
P245A-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT /OPEN
Theory of Operation
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Valve is used to redirect the EGR gases around the cooler when the engine is in an active regeneration mode. This is to prevent EGR cooler fouling. The EGR Cooler Bypass Valve is a smart device which communicates it's status to the Engine Control Module (ECM). At key on the ECM drives the signal line low and then high and monitors the correct status response from the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve. Throughout engine operation the ECM sends commands to the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve over the signal circuit. EGR Cooler Bypass Valve status line voltage should be within 5-8 volts. When a fault occurs the EGR Cooler Bypass valve will send a signal between 1.0 and 1.7 volts on the status line to the ECM. The ECM also monitors exhaust gas recirculation temperature Ito determine if the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve was in bypass mode incorrectly. The ECM will light a MIL lamp immediately after this diagnostic runs and fails. The ECM will turn off the MIL lamp after the diagnostic passes in four consecutive drive cycles.· When Monitored:
Key on.
· Set Condition:
Voltage detected at status line is between 1.0 volt and 1.7 volts for more than 150 seconds consecutively.

Call edge back and tell them you would be willing to reinstall the cooler and just block the EGR, but people are still getting the P245A code.

Thanks Schmidty. I guess I will just have to drive with the CEL light on in the winter time. What differences did you notice with your truck when you deleted the EGR? The reason I ask you this is because our setups are similar. Thanks

Nothing but a cleaner running engine. You will need to remove the white gear that operated the butterfly on the intake side or your truck will have a rough idle for 30 seconds (give or take) when you first start it.

Do you have the cooler deleted or the EGR simply blocked? I would still call edge and ask them about simply blocking the EGR and people still getting the P245A. It would help those that want a fix for the code (me and others). If they can't fix it, they should not claim that the EGR can be blocked and the truck will be completely code free on start up. Deleting the cooler doesn't help the truck anymore than just blocking the EGR.

I am just going to block the egr. I am not sure if I will do it now or not? I really dont want to drive around with my CEL on !!!

Mine is just blocked and I get the P245A code when it's cold out. Like I mentioned call edge and ask them if they have a fix. Some of the techs don't know the difference between deleting the entire cooler and just blocking the EGR. Tell them you are just blocking the EGR. I talked to Jared at edge and I think he understood. There engineer even told me the blocked EGR should not be an issue. If you call them, I'd like to know what they tell you (if you don't mind).

I hate codes and I hate it when claims are made that prove to be untrue. I/we spent almost a grand on this product.

is this happening on the older trucks as well. i see schmidty has an 09. i dont live in nd, but a couple weeks ago it got down in the teens for about a week. i never got any unusual codes. see sig for mods.

I talked to Edge and this time the guy tells me that the Edge doesnt claim to clear the codes for the EGR block but sometimes they will???? What tha %^& is that suppose to mean? SOMETIMES??? It was hard for me to argue a great deal with him because I haven't got my kit in the mail from James yet and installed it. I dont know how they explain sometimes it will though? Come to think of it James told me himself that the Edge would clear it 95% of the time. What gives??

Temp and edge

I usually see it when it's close to 0 F or lower. Before I bought my edge, I asked about blocking the EGR. They?Edge said it would take care of the codes and they also recommened removing the butterfly. Clears codes some of the time; I don't think I would advertise that as a company.

I still think the edge unit is great, but fix the code that pops up in the cold.

Do you run the stock timing or the juice timing on your juice race schmidty? Whats the difference?

I think

I often leave it stock. I think the juice timing gives you improved mileage and helps you get a bit more power (I think). I'm not really into the big power. I just bought to clear the codes for the deleted DPF and blocked EGR (that's why the P245A code bugs me). Every now and then I like to blow coal and surprise people in rice burners (rare). I usually change the time to the edge timing when on trips.
